Do we really need rich people?

There’s a point of wealthy enough where you would not have to worry about money ever again. I would put that at a million or two. But there’s so many billionaires and a subset of them go around ruining the lives of ordinary people without giving it a second thought. They use their wealth to game the system into getting them off without penalty. Ever heard “Rich people never go to jail” sure there are exceptions but armed with their powerful lawyers this is the sad truth 99% of the time.

rich citizens aren't the problem, rich politicians are; one gains wealth through business, the other gains wealth through taxing the non-rich...
Dshhh · M
@wildbill83 the scale is way off.. taxes, at least in theory, are to pay for things we need, like roads and schools.
but billionaires can BUY the government and do so unstoppablly for at least a century
look into the NEGATIVE tax rate of our larger corps

It would be nice if people could keep their money that they earn instead of having it taxed away at many levels to pay for someone else to spend on pork barrel projects. They would probably feel rich if that happened.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
And theres also the thing as the rich people are the reason poor people get a pay check each week.
Its not all bad
Fluffybull · F
@Virgo79 Exactly. A lot of rich people create wealth and create jobs.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@Fluffybull not all but most, people can complain but without them where would regular people get enough money to live.
Fluffybull · F
@Virgo79 Exactly. And I bet the people moaning about rich people wouldn't turn down the chance to be rich themselves!
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
I don't want to be millionaire rich. I want to be able to put oil in the car when that light comes on rich, instead of just putting sticky tape over it.
ShadowWolf · 31-35, M
If people earned the wealth, or they inherited it from their parents, I see nothing wrong with it. If you don't like capitalism, go to North Korea. Just because people have a Billion or a Million makes no difference. It's the person themselves. There are plenty of Billionaires making the world a better place. Some bad apples of course. Some millionaires are complete asses. We can make the same argument that there's a decent amount of poor people creating massive amounts of crime in communities. And then there are a decent amount of humble amazing poor people trying to make the world a better place.

It comes down to pure greed. As you say, they game the system just so they can get richer.
I despise these sort of people. How many rich people rort the system to reduce their taxes? 96 - 97 - 98%?
Plus they feel a sense of entitlement.
Even the philanthropic ones give very little of their billions to the needy.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
I think you over-estimate the buying power of a million dollars, but I do agree that when you're getting into the billions it's overkill.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
A little thought experiment. I have a million dollars and I want to do the greatest good to the greatest number of people. With that in mind would I be better off to give the million dollars to a rich man or a poor man?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@sdave455 No one is playing God. I am asking if you had a million dollars and wanted to do the most good for the most people would you give the million to a rich man or a poor man? Simple question. Care to offer an opinion?
sdave455 · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 Really? You set yourself up to decide which man gets the million and you’re not playing God? Perhaps you might spend some time outside your personal echo chamber.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@sdave455 I am asking a simple question. What part of the question do you not understand and why are you avoiding answering it.

Where I live a regular three bedroom house with a small yard goes for almost million 🤷🏻‍♀️ So although I don’t have a number to provide you I’d say it would take more than a couple million to really be ‘rich’
sdave455 · 41-45, M
@WhateverWorks A couple million would pay off your housing costs leaving you with plenty of money to invest and live off of.
WhateverWorks · 36-40
That implies investment stability and exponential growth is guaranteed. It also doesn’t account for families long-term costs. Again, I don’t have a number off the top of my head, but I’m thinking between two adults and two growing children without an additional source of dependable income that money would be gone in a short number of years 🤔 @sdave455

I think people need strong intergrity when it comes enforcement.
Some never been arrested because they bend the system by corrupting the people (money).

Let say money has no value, what other offers can these crooks do to make them keep on power?
familyfunguy · 56-60, M
We don't need them and they don't need us. We (the 99%) mainly helped make them what they currently are, and we could also disappear without hurting them.
firefall · 61-69, M
Not only do we not need really rich people, they are actively detrimental to the rest of us, in so many ways.
doong · 56-60, M
Yes. Rich people have company that provide jobs for others.

Money isn't everything.
