Getting around a Reddit ban

Reddit isn't like SW. It's not easy to get around a ban.

I was permanently banned from Reddit for a very stupid reason. I had two separate profiles, one for politics, bicycles, whiskey, and other interests, and another just for sex-related stuff. I did this because several times when I made a political comment, somebody would respond with "don't listen to this guy, he's into fat women" or something similar.

The problem with this is when I was banned from one sub, commenting on that same sub from the other profile constituted "ban evasion." So whenever I was banned from a sub on one profile, I would immediately mute the sub on the other profile to make sure I didn't inadvertently comment on it.

Well, as it turned out, I commented on a sub that I'd been banned from on the other profile without being aware of it, so both profiles were banned from the entire site. I appealed and was told to get lost. This is a known issue with Reddit. What should happen is when you're banned from a sub on one profile, the other profile should be banned too, to avoid inadvertent ban evasion. They don't do this, which as far as I'm concerned is entrapment. But it's their site, so they can do what they want, I guess.

Here's how I got back on Reddit. First, I changed my IP address, because they track this. Then, I set up a brand-new account using a different email, because they track this, too. Then, I installed the Brave browser because it blocks websites' access to things like your screen resolution and other ways they can identify your computer. Yes, Reddit does this, too. Finally, I uninstalled the phone app. You absolutely cannot log into your account with the phone app because they will definitely identify you with it. The only way around this is to use a different phone. So now I only access Reddit on my computer. This also helps because they check things like which subs you follow and what time you tend to access the site. Now I'm following all of the subs I'm interested in, so it doesn't match either old profile, and I never log on during the day, so that pattern is different too. I also figured out that I can block certain subs from appearing on my profile history, so anyone snooping it won't see the more controversial ones; just the innocuous ones. And now, with one profile, there's no danger of ban evasion because that's the only profile I use to access anything.

Finally, if you do this, don't announce "haha, I'm back" on your new account because they will definitely notice that.

You should also delete cookies as well ~ so called zombie cookies are harder to clear. If you use incognito mode it helps disguise you further 🥸 same with using a VPN.

Usually detection relies on an error-percentage, and they set the strictness of this, for example it would be unfair to ban all users of a particular IP address, as it could be a household, so they use user-specific information like app, cookies, devices that are linked to build a picture of who the user is.

If they get over a level of “reasonable doubt” ~ then they ban them with confidence.

If they are muddied by a lot of data that doesn’t fit ~ they don’t ban as they might ban a bunch of innocent users who just share an IP address (not just family, workplace IP, Dormitories, Cafe wi-fi, Workplace Internet)

Most users don’t attempt any sort of evasion, so it is easy to ban them ~ like a digital fingerprint 🫆
@BurningBright I've heard of people who were banned because of a family member on the same IP address. And yes, delete all cookies.

@LeopoldBloom on Reddit? Depends on it the device is used by different people and how the IP is perceived. Might just be a bit different if the IP is roaming or static too.

It’s the same with login patterns. 2 accounts that login/out at similar times or consecutively might flag too.

VPN can prevent that, although VPN comes with a risk or a ban because that VPN IP might flag too
@BurningBright Since I deleted the phone app, I can't log in at all during the day, so my usage pattern is completely different.

And it's for this reason that it would be impossible for me to return to Reddit.

I would want to go back to my favorite subs, talk about my favorite subjects, and that's how I'd get caught.

So instead, I appeal every day, hoping that one day, a different admin looks at my story and realizes that my ban was for homophobic BS reasons.

That sounds like far more trouble than Reddit's worth. 🙄
@Thinkerbell I just wanted to see if I could do it.
