There are things you can do to immortalize yourself. Write a best selling novel. Tolkien will be remembered forever. Bach, Tchaikovsky for music.. Michael Jackson. Trump even, he will be remembered as the worst president ever and people will take turns peeing on his grave.
All that other stuff, the buildings, housing, it is all built to be temporary. If humanity wanted things to last they would build them from concrete or steel.

The passing fad of existence. As I get older I almost find myself getting obsessive with the settled in realization that each day is a day lost forever. The finality of death. Some days it gives purpose and a reason to fight to leave a mark. Other days it's wondering what's the point.

Thinking about all of this makes my heart fade a little. The house I grew up in is already a place I can never visit again, and somehow that makes these words feel even heavier. We spend our lives building memories in places, only to realize that one day, even those places can become unreachable.
@Bleak But it isn't about the memories, it is about pleasure. You build things, take care of them, live in them, because it makes you feel good. It isn't so much the house as it is what the house does to make you happy. Like us, it is only temporary. Nothing to be sad about, if you have fond memories, mission accomplished.
