I heard skype is closing down in may. Is there anything similer that is free and easy to share like music and pics/vids?
.
I used it to talk to some family outside of the usa on it so wondering if anybody knows any good program similer to it?

So since Microsoft owns Skype, they are transitioning everyone over to Microsoft Teams. You can download and get it and use it for free, just like you can Skype.

Recently on Teams I did see a message that said "Missing your Skype contacts?" "No need to worry something something something Skype contacts imported something something"

So I think your Skype contacts will be moved over to Teams, just not sure when. Discord is another option. My friend and I share screen a lot, so for us Teams is a better alternative to Skype. We had some problems trying to use Discord with calling and share screen functionality.

@twiigss Paid Calls (calling landlines/mobiles) is being fully discontinued, though.

@Nuno Gotcha. Thanks for that extra info Nuno.
I use it every day and I'll miss it. Microsoft wants users to transition to Teams, but I have my doubts. I've seen Viber suggested as an alternative. I haven't used it yet, but I'm going to give it a try. Whatsapp is a Meta product and I don't trust anything from Meta. So that's out.

@livigdeadgirl that would be great if they did bring all that back

@livigdeadgirl I would imagine the only way aim or msn messenger could come back is if those companies officially brought them back into operation. So the escargot might be something that looks and feels the same. I've just switched over to using teams and discord

Whatsapp is popular in a fair number of companies. On recent trips to Costa Rica it was a must have.

@Neoerectus Is whatsapp fully secure? My work is MS-based as is Scouts NSW and both organisations are focused on the MS collaborative tools. There are a lot of unofficial facebook groups used by workgroups, social groups, etc. too but they're not secure or have proper controls. And on FB 'big brother/sister' is always watching. I personally do not like IT-based collaboration tools but organisational choices are above my 'pay grade' in both paid and volunteer orgs I'm part of.

Wow are u serious about Skype Holly cow. That's bad. U may be able to use snap or install but I'll have to check if there is anything close to Skype
@496sbc I agree, cows and holly don't mix well.

Telegram works well on all devices. Google Chat is also easy to use. If you have a gmail account you're ready to go with it.

They'll replace most of the functions with Microsoft Teams. Only calling regular phone numbers won't be supported, I believe.

I've used Zoom instead of Skype for video calls for some time

You can try WhatsApp or Facebook messenger or Snapchat
It is replaced by Microsoft teams, but you can also use, zoom, whatsapp, messenger, etc.

WhatsApp does most of what you want. Telegram as well

If you have any items on your Skype account you should recover them

Nothing to beat IRC & skype. There is no app to meet strangers these days. All of them are run by scammers. Really a bad trend.

I used to use text plus, it's free
