I opened YouTube just now and the top suggested video was for Cornish Heavy Cake. I wonder why the algorithm picked it. St Piran's day was yesterday, and I'm half Cornish. Does YouTube know that?

I've never made one and can't remember having eaten one. Or rather I do remember having such cakes but not by name.

@ninalanyon Definitely try the recipe, it's a fantastic cake. The bakery in St Ives where I last bought it does a version with saffron which is also delicious. The original Cornish word is "hevva". The currants represent the sardines which once sustained local communities in Cornwall.

@SunshineGirl Yes, the name heavy is simply the English word that sounds nearest to the Cornish.
I haven't stayed in St Ives for years. Was there for a day trip a couple of years ago but it's usually too expensive. Usually on my travels I end up in the South West at the end of my trip which usually means August, perhaps I should try going round the country in a different order this time and see if it's cheaper.
When I was a child we often went to St Ives for our summer holiday, sometimes staying in a B&B but more often in a static caravan at Carbis Bay or Hayle.
