Nina's Blog - Friday 27th February 2026

Had a bad start today. I decided to visit the free library at Fornebu S as I haven't been out of the village so far this week and I haven't been there in a while.

First thing that went wrong was that when I went to check my email before leaving the network was down. Then I left the house without picking up the books to leave at the library.

But those are just minor irritations. What happened next was much more annoying. Once I got up to speed on the road to the next town I engaged autosteer as usual. No problem. But a little while later it dropped out. I didn't think anything of that, there was a bit of fog and the light wasn't good, just the conditions that my car finds a bit trying. Re-engaged it when it was ready, again nothing really out of the ordinary. But over the next 15 km it dropped out rather more often than usual, not that I have exact statistics of course but I'm so used to how it works that I feel it rather than calculate it. Then when I got on the motorway it worked briefly and then dropped out again. This time with a message in the instrument cluster that I've never seen before: Cruise control disabled.

At first I thought it was just temporary and tried re-engaging but that didn't work. So I stopped at a supercharger to charge and also to turn off the car and turn it back on. Didn't help. The message was also misleading because ordinary traffic aware cruise control is still working but autosteer isn't; every time I try to engage it I get a message saying that it is temporarily unavailable.

This is really bad because in about six weeks I intend to set start my summer holiday and that begins with 1 700 km of motorway driving. Autosteer makes that much less tiring.

So I'll give the car a chance to pull itself together today but if it doesn't come to its senses by the time I get home I'll have to book it in for repair and hope that Tesla can get it done quickly.

As you know already, I am not a fan of the Tesla or electric cars we have already discussed that topic before. Though they are great for you when they work but I am not into all this auto drive and letting tech to run my life. Good luck and I hope he repair cost won't be too expensive.

@WillaKissing It's not really auto drive, it's just good lane keeping plus semi-autonomous overtaking. I find it makes long drives less tiring.

Anyway the car seems to have pulled itself together and it worked perfectly on the way home. So now I'm wondering what happened and is it going to happen again. So I'll use it as an excuse to go out for a longer drive tomorrow to see if it behaves itself, and visit one of my favourite cafes and a favourite charity shop.

@ninalanyon I wonder because you said it was foggy if the fog itself was not the issue with the vehicle's electronics?

@WillaKissing I don't think the fog had anything to do with it as far as damp is concerned. The car is very reliable in that respect, neither cold nor wet have caused any troubles unlike ignition systems on some cars I have owned. But it's plausible that the camera doesn't see well in foggy low contrast conditions. My Model S is a 2015 model so it only has a single monochrome camera which doesn't see as well as the newer ones.

Fingers crossed, I hope it was just some obscure and rare set of conditions that the neural network didn't like.

Today's outfit is opaque but lighter than lately tights, ankle boots for the first time this year, a denim skirt, warm denim jacket, big scarf, broad brimmed hat, jumper.

Doesn't sound good!

@22Michelle It's almost as if the gods have it in for me; several times I've been just about to set off on a long trip only for something annoying to happen.

A couple of years ago the driver's side door handle failed, it wouldn't pop out so you couldn't grab it to pull it open. It would open from the inside so it was just annoying. But it happened only two days before I was intending to leave! Luckily it was something that could be repaired by a Tesla mobile mechanic and also was a purely mechanical problem. Had it been an electronic failure the lead time for new parts was at least two months and also uncertain.

@ninalanyon over the past few years I've been avouding dribing in favour of walking. Good for my health, but the car seems to get more temperamental. The joys.
