I'm in my room in Crewe. Watched the end of Evolution, not the world most important film but [pleasantly amusing. After that I channel surfed for a while and came across Canal Boat Diaries by Robbie Cumming on BBC4. The first thing I saw was him going over the Swing Aqueduct on the Bridgewater Canal. I was there in June. Then he went to Leigh where I was last week. Now he's heading for Nantwich which is the town next door to Crewe where I am now.
It's making me pine for a narrow boat holiday.but it's even more expensive than staying in hotels. I'm sure it wasn't so expensive when we did it years ago with the children. Then we generally had a 60 or 70 foot boat and it was distinctly cheaper than spending te same amount of time in mid price hotels. I've just had a quick look at some narrow boat booking sites and they want 1 329 GBP or more for a 49 foot boat for a week. That's ridiculous. Almost 200 GBP per night.
Found another for 940 GBP a week. But that's still over 130 GBP per night.
@turbineman40 This started before COVID. And it's not just part of a general increase in prices, hiring a narrowboat has increased in price much faster than hotel prices have; at least it seems that way to me.
What's the collective noun for a group of grannies? On my way back from my meet I was strolling along past Hyde Park Corner when I encountered a gaggle of grannies all with identical grey hair in identical nighties. Of course they were all perfectly made up young women, in their twenties I would guess. I said how great they looked and got some gorgeous smiles and a couple of "Thank you!"s.
@22Michelle Leeds generally and Headingley in particular was full of people in fancy dress. Apparently it happens every weekend and people travel as far as from London for it.
There were varying degrees of originality, lots of cowboys and cowgirls a few men dressed as for the boozier kind of stag do in I'll fitting dresses and big boobs. As I was passing one such group one of them pulled out one of his fake tits and said to me "Almost as big as yours love."
Leeds seems to be a party town on Saturdays at least, I don't think I have ever been anywhere with so many people intent on having a good time. There were fancy dressed people in sight on my walk all the way from the centre out to Headingley yesterday evening, that's about 3 km.
@Matt85 This one was good, but I find them just as variable as meat ones. I would prefer something vegetable that wasn't pretending to be meat, but it seems hard to find these days. It was much easier to find good vegetarian and vegan food in the days of hippy cafes and wholefood shops in the seventies and late sixties, even in the early eighties; but since it got respectable it has got more expensive and less authentic.
Headingley is full of young people in fancy dress. According to the woman serving in the café it started many years ago as an occasional event, then became monthly, and now is pretty much every weekend.
Got back from my meet. Not entirely satisfactory. After a while he asked to stop for a moment to check his phone. Turned out he had another meet arranged with some woman for nine o'clock.
@22Michelle Quite. So as far as I'm concerned I never really got into it. Never felt lost in the moment. Never mind the previous couple of meets were good. Especially with kirkby from Fabguys when I was in Ulverston. He's a well muscled part time gamekeeper and we kissed and writhed and sucked and fucked and had no thought for anything else. At least I didn't and he behaved like he didn't!
Mind you kirkby was still slightly concerned about his neighbours seeing me, only slightly but it was there.
