Nina's Blog - Saturday 26th July 2025

Saturday 26th July 2025, 09:23

Been up for over an hour and still in my undies. The big decision of the day is the same every day: what to wear :-)

I'm going to drive up to Turton for a walk and to visit the cafe at Turton Tower that has been advertised incessantly on Radio Caroline for the last several months.

I have no idea if it's any good, it's just that i find having a specific goal helps motivate me. Quite often I end up not reaching it because I get distracted by something more interesting on the way.

@skimpyboy I visited this morning. The woodland paths are good but not terribly extensive. The café was a major disappointment. But Turton Tower itself is a small marvel.

The café is really just a food truck outside a covered seating area that might well have been a store or animal shelter when the house was part of a larger estate. They serve drinks in paper cups so I didn't stay for coffee. I did have an ice cream but that too was slightly disappointing as they had no cones only paper tubs and it came with the flimsiest disposable spoon I have ever used. The ice cream was good though, Thunder and Lightning, vanilla ice cream with chocolate and cinder toffee.

So I drove across country to the Village Green Tearoom, Rivington, where I have just finished my mocha that was served in a large pottery cup.

@ninalanyon Surprised and disappointed to hear how poor Turton cafe was , I was hoping to visit and get a friend to take some pics of me in the woodland .
Was thinking it might be good but agree that paper cups are no good and obviously the tea and coffee would be nothing special

@skimpyboy The tower is very much worth a visit. It's really a manor house but the oldest parts dates from the fifteenth century or earlier. The volunteer guides are both knowledgeable and enthusiastic, very easy to talk to about the place. I took some pictures but mostly with my camera so they will have to wait until I get back to my hotel room.

Here's the outside showing the original tower and the later sixteenth century, and later, half timbered additions

And here's the library

@skimpyboy. Thank you! I took a few slightly naughtier ones too. I really ought to do some exercises to tighten up my belly muscles!

@skimpyboy Those were taken on a disused and overgrown bridge over the railway. But it's only a few metres from a wide stony path so you'd need to keep a lookout.
