In case SW might close in the future, what can I do about my articles I wish to save?

I have written something like 3,227 articles here and I found out that I can't get them all in one bundle and save them from here. They said that they don't have a way to do that here and that really bothers me, because I want them all and I worked so hard on them. I don't know how to get them all into one file. It seems like when I transferred my posts over from EP, I was looking at them and it seemed like the whole article was not there, so that really concerns me and so I asked the staff if I could have all my articles that I wrote here, sent to me and they said they can't do that, but also my EP articles were sent in a zip file and I don't know how to unzip them. I don't understand that technical stuff, but somehow I was able to click on a post I had written and got to read it, but it just didn't seem the same. I just want them sent to me an easy to open format, like esch article would be in pdf form and also have it so that if I wanted to copy my articles, I could also do that from the pdf document , but it looks like I'm going to lose all my articles and that really bothers me, cuz I wanted to make a book of them for myself, so I could hand them down to my daughters and grandchildren. I wish I had a solution. I just can't copy them all one by one, that would take forever. I've always been good with doing everything else on the computer it seems, but I don't like these deals where you have to unzip things and make it more complicated. And then it seems like if they send it to me in a zip file, I have a time trying to get it to open and all that stuff and I just hate it. There has to be a better way.

By articles do you mean posts? If so, are you wanting to save everyone's replies as well?

3200 posts seems like a lot but what I would recommend is when you prepare a new storage space (and a back-up that is NOT on the same device) just skim things to see what really needs saved. You may decide some things are not real important.

Here are the steps I would take, without getting too technical -

1) Make a new folder on your device and name it something like "SW Posts"

2) Open it and create more folders, if you wish, and rename those with specific titles pertinent to the types of posts.

Now you are ready to to start copying and pasting you articles and/or posts.
Start with the earliest page, which right now is this one -
https://similarworlds.com/LadyGrace?page=130

When you open your favorite word processor program, you can just copy and paste the contents of the post to it. Of course name the file then store it in one of those folders that closest matches what the thread is about.

You can create more folders as needed.
Somewhere keep a note of what article you left off with so when you go back, it will be easier to pick up where you left off.

another clue, see that link where it says 130? That can be changed in the address bar for easy access to whatever page you were on when you left off. Make a note of what page you were on each time you quit working on it for the day or time being.

Once you get going, it probably won't take as long to save everything as you think. I do not know about two days like adstar said but maybe a few weeks to a couple months depending on how much time each day you work on it.

EACH TIME you save thing to those folders though, make sure you back up your work to a USB drive, the cloud, or something that is not the device you are working on. You do not want to just lose your work if your table or computer crashes.

@CestManan You are so kind to take all the time and trouble to write all this to me. I am saving it all to my tablet. No I'm not wanting to save the replies, just my posts, just the ones that are important to me. Thank you so much. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

@LadyGrace glad to help, I know it was quite a read. But also consider if you're not saving every single one of your posts then it will take even less time than what you're expecting.

There is a Firefox add-on called Single file that can save the page as it is shown as an HTML web page file. You can set it up so that when you bookmark a page it will save the page as well. That way you just need to visit the page and press Control-D. A bit tedious for thousands of pages but it does work. I use it a lot especially if I have written a long reply in an argument where my reply or the comment I am replying to is at risk of being deleted. I also use it to save my SW blog entries and private messages partly in case SW goes out of business but also because it is easier to search the content on my own computer than here on SW.

To view a saved page you just open it with your web browser.

You can find the the add-on here: https://github.com/gildas-lormeau/SingleFile

SingleFile can be installed on:

- Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/single-file
- Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/mpiodijhokgodhhofbcjdecpffjipkle
- Microsoft Edge: https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/efnbkdcfmcmnhlkaijjjmhjjgladedno

As for zip files all you have to do is find them in your computer with WIndows Explorer or other file manager and double click it then the computer will show the content. But it might not be in a useful format.

@ninalanyon Thank you dear so much for all your time and trouble to help me like this. I am going to save all your information you gave me on my tablet. That was just so sweet of you. ⭐❤️🤗

@LadyGrace If you are only using a tablet and not a computer then I'm not sure if it's possible to install the SingleFile add-on. Worth trying though. Good luck.

If you ever find another way of doing it please post it on SW so that the rest of us can use it too!

@ninalanyon Realistically, I'm not very good at things like that. I have begun to save what posts I write that are important to me, in Microsoft Quick Notes on my tablet. I don't have an iPad. It's no hassle and easy for me.

well, if they arent worth your time to copy and paste then are they worth the time to read?
eta- not trying to be mean, just trying to give you something to think on and perhaps motivate?
@LadyGrace You should make a copy after each post. I have over 600 reviews on Amazon and decided to make copies after they deleted the account of a guy I was following. He had hundreds of reviews, all gone. So I figured I’d better save my work in case that happens to me.

As it is, Amazon stopped allowing comments on reviews, so all of those are gone. It’s a shame. There was one review by Dr. Gerald Woerlee of a book about near-death experiences with thousands of comments in a long conversation that many people contributed to over several years. All gone now. The review is still there but without any comments.

@LeopoldBloom Oh that is such a shame. I'm so sorry that happened to you and I would have dearly loved to have read the comments. I have begun to save what posts I write that are important to me, in Microsoft Quick Notes on my tablet. I don't have an iPad.
@LadyGrace I never thought of saving the comments, but to be honest, most of them wouldn't have made sense without the rest of the thread. I am glad I have all of the reviews saved.

Its like you need an Ipad or computer dedicated to saving your articles.
LadyGrace · 70-79
@cherokeepatti Yes, I had an iPad but I hated it so I just have a tablet now.

You can take screenshots of them but that would probably be time consuming.

Well you can look at your profile and view your posts and then copy and paste each one into a Word document.. I saved a lot of my early posts in other forums that way.. Yes a bit laborious.. But you get quicker as you get into it.. You could probably do it in two days..
LadyGrace · 70-79
@Adstar Laborous indeed. 3227 posts?? I don't know.
LadyGrace · 70-79
@Adstar I think I'll do as you suggested. Thank you for the encouragement.

I may not get them all done but I'll try.... it might take me a couple years hahaha

Maybe going forward, write your articles on computer, then copy/paste to SW. Just a thought.
LadyGrace · 70-79
@uncalled4 I had done that before but I was trying to save space so I stopped quite some time ago. But now I do save them on my tablet, as I go along but I'm still missing a couple thousand. Haha
