Why do people add you as a follower here?

Do they think you will just add them back? Which kind of logic is that, the logic of desperation?

I am discerning of who I am accepting as “friends” here, just like I am in real life!

The terms used by social media are a kind jargon with meanings that not always match what they do in other enviroments.
Some users may "follow" you for several reasons.
New ones getting a number to begin with, as it make them less isolated.
Others that liked your profile and/or found your posts to be interesting and want your future ones to be in their notifications.
As if two users "follow" each other, they become "friends"......
.......that may include the ones that would like to become "friends" (with the above said meaning).
And........as in "real life", yes, only sometimes, for not so good reasons.
