world’s biggest sporting event

gotta be the World Cup, or the Cricket World Cup(?)

Northwest · M
It's mostly a USA sport, but I would wager you that we don't think the Super Bowl is the world's biggest sport event.

It is, however complicated, because it's not just a single game.

The NFL teams go through the regular season, split into two conferences: the NFC and the AFC, and they are in turn split into 16 teams each.

The NFC teas and AFC teams play teams within their conferences, for a total of 272 games for the NFL during the regular season, and then you have the playoffs with 12 games and the big game: Super Bowl.

Average regular season game is close to 15 Million viewers, 50+ million for the playoffs, 70+ million for divisional and something like 130 million for the super bowl.

And it gets more complicated, when you take college football into consideration.

But I'm sure you're going to find someone in a red state who thinks that the Super Bowl in the world's most important sporting event, just as I'm sure you will find someone outside the USA, who thinks that American Football is all about a single event: the Super Bowl.
Generally speaking Americans know soccer is the most popular sport in the world.

I watched only couple of pro games in my life. Seeing these guys faking injury to get a foul called makes me feel like I can't take any of it seriously.
I used to love playing the game in school though.

I remember a superbowl years back where one of the players says”We’re the best in the world”!!
My thoughts were you’d never stand a chance at Australian football!!
MethDozer · M
@Quimliqer I always thought it would be cool to get some international teams and play a seasons worth of games where the teams all played rugby, australian, both Canadian and American gridiron rules and see determine the champion based on the best over season score of all the rule sets. No special teams for each rule set, just the same teams playing a different ruleset each week over a couple of months.
Quimliqer · 70-79, MVIP
@MethDozer That would be an exciting set of games to watch!!

I do agree though it's not the biggest event .Id rather watch any kind of auto racing. But the Olympics is probably the biggest
kodiac · 22-25, M
A bunch of boys in short pants and knee socks crying because they got a boo boo( i have actually tried to watch soccer it's 30 minutes of running back and forth finally taking a shot then 30 minutes of the same thing .I guess i just don't get it
AdmiralPrune · 41-45, M
@kodiac True but then Rugby player would eat Super Bowl players alive
kodiac · 22-25, M
@AdmiralPrune seriously? Are they 6.5 ft 340 lbs?
AdmiralPrune · 41-45, M
@kodiac They're bigger. And they don’t need helmets or padding

Oi, mate, don’t be daft — the World Cup’s miles better than that Super Bowl malarkey. You lot get all excited over four hours of adverts, lukewarm nachos, and blokes in shoulder pads stoppin’ every twelve seconds. Meanwhile, we’ve got thirty‑two nations goin’ full tilt for a month straight, proper limbs flyin’ when someone bangs one in from thirty yards. It’s the beautiful game, innit. Not whatever that padded‑up rugby cosplay is you’re watchin’. Sort yourself out, yeah?

We’re extremely isolated over her and most have no perspective of anything beyond Canada or Mexico
AdmiralPrune · 41-45, M
@EBSVC Yes but you’re aware of that. It feels like the majority of your compatriots can’t process that.
EBSVC · 41-45, T
@AdmiralPrune Yea well…if they were things would be going a lot differently right now

@MethDozer I'm not a fan of football, or the American version, where they only seem to kick a ball every half hour or so, so a friend took me to an American football match, i have to say it was a pretty good show, interrupted by some extremely well padded chaps handing a ovoid ball to their friends, whilst playing what looked like kiss chase. That being said, i was then taken to a rest of the world type football match, only to find it was more of a competition in falling over, pretending to be hurt, and when no-one took any notice they got up and seemed to be quite unharmed, but they did have a ball shaped ball and tended to use a foot or 2, so on that basis alone, the rest of the world football would have to be the best. This doesn't mean i will ever waste any more of my life watching either
