What it looks like from here is that schools and coaches are moving too fast in their attempts to magically create winning teams, faster than players can learn and adapt what so called winning coaches are trying to turn their teams into. The big salaries prompt new coaches to try to make overnight changes so they can justify their big paycheck. When a team does make it to the top their assistant coaches get lured away with big salaries the next years by universities with nonwinning records. In the background, a similar shuffling goes on at the Athletic Director level. Sustainability seems to be when there is a connection between ADs, coaches, players and the communities/universities that go beyond the paycheck. We get to witness the above at the southern end of the SEC every year. Oklahoma, Kansas … the heartlands, the old Big 8, was just the opposite for years. Welcome to the SEC :)

That's basically the going rate now at top universities. $7 million puts Venables at around no. 25 of top paid coaches. Brilliant DC at Clemson, but he's in the hot seat now.

@cherokeepatti And that's a crime taxing citizens given the money these universities make. Conferences are breaking up because of the TV revenue. The PAC12 (essentially) no longer exists because of it. $30 million per year per university in TV revenue wasn't enough for 10 of the 12 teams in the conference, so they found other conferences that pay better. And then gov't increases people's property taxes every year to pay for "stadium improvements.". Pisses me off to no end.

@BizSuitStacy Now the university officials are wanting to build a huge sports arena near a shopping area and the hospital. Many of the citizens here are against it. It will take money away from the city budget that should be used for police, fire department etc. They are trying to convince the citizens that it won’t cost us anything. Someone suggested that they use foundation donations since they have a huge surplus but they insist on trying to pull one over on us. Not to mention that since it’s so close to the hospital & near the interstate that the traffic from all the events is likely to interfere with ambulances transporting patients, especially ones who are in critical condition.
@BizSuitStacy Here's a good one, in the late 90's the Pro Bowlers Association convinced the city of Reno, Nevada, to put a bond to a vote to the Citizens of the city to raise the sales tax like half a percentage or so to build a new bowling stadium. When it was completed, during grand opening ceremonies the prez of the PBA announced that it was off limits to open bowling, that ONLY PBA sanctioned tournaments with registered teams were allowed to use it. The last I heard it's still being held up in appealate court after the PBA lost the lawsuit, and it's still not allowed to have open bowling roughly roughly 27 years later.

Take what Indiana did - they hired a head coach with a proven record throughout his career. Then he and the university brought in a boatload of proven transfers (like the Canadian QB Kurtis Rourke from the Ohio Bobcats).
They are vying for a 9 - 0 start (first time ever for the Hoosiers) later today @ Michigan State.

Saturday night in Baton Rouge. Can’t wait. The big chance for one or the other to go out with a bang and the other to call for the coach’s head. LSUs 3 losses in a row has yet to heal.

Oh wait! They did great against Maine today. Reminds me of their games against KU.

@Heartlander oh yes they did. I don’t know how I got that mixed up. 😂

@cherokeepatti While not a great season, it hasn’t been a horrible season for OU’ their losses all to highly rated teams. I’m looking forward to them heading to Baton Rouge to end the regular season.
It’s kind of sad now with all the nearby teams belonging to different conferences. One hope is for the SEC to expand with another 4 or 6 teams and the SEC West would be made up of all or most of the old Big 8.

That's capitalism! Greatest form of government in the world! 🤣
@SpudMuffin That is not capitalism as college football has nothing to do with actual commerce or the markets.
SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
@NativePortlander1970 of course it's capitalism! If colleges all offered a sensible salary the coaches would have no choice but to take it, or go and work in McDonalds.

Yep i agree
Seven million US dollars? Now we know why colleges cost so much to attend.
@cherokeepatti I know many attorneys that would take it as a challenge, including my older stepsister, who is a retired county prosecutor.
