Have you ever had a dental procedure with sedation?

I need either sedation or possibly anesthesia for an upcoming root canal. I have pain issues in my jaw and occasionally vertigo so they said I should go to a facility that offers sedation or anesthesia. If you've had sedation, what was it like? Could you still communicate to the doctor if you needed to? Is it like feeling very groggy? I fear if I choose sedation, and my jaw starts hurting and I need a break, can I feel conscious enough to tell them?

I had laughing gas. I was conscious but numb in the area they worked on.

@uncalled4 And did you have heavy arms? It's says on Google you'll feel light headed on nitrous oxide and heavy arms but feel no anxiety or pain.

@Baybreeze I don't recall that specifically. It was a long time ago.

@uncalled4 do you recall feeling light headed, or just kind of floating?

I was sedated for root canals, and I was totally out, unaware and unable to communicate. It did not last long, and I recovered quickly. I had another procedure with mild sedation, and it was terribly uncomfortable. I was unable to bear the discomfort of the brace they used to keep my mouth wide open. I recommend complete sedation. Take a nap and let them do the work.

@exexec By totally out you mean with anaesthesia? Are you able to drive after a bit of recovery time that day? Oh God I'm sure my jaw pain would elevate if I felt a brace used to hold it open🙁

@Baybreeze They had to use a brace because it was a back tooth. Yes, it was anesthesia, and I was able to drive, as I recall. On another occasion, I was not permitted to drive after the dental procedure with anesthesia. I suppose it depends on the dosage.
