Anyone need to be sedated or go under fully for a root canal?

Had X-ray done and un fortunately I need my first root canal. It's on the back too, and it made me nervous because I have not only TMJ jaw pain often, I can't open my mouth fully, and I also have a misaligned jaw . If pain is near the joint area of my jaw, I get vertigo, from the misaligned jaw.

I explained this to the dentist and he said with these three issues it would be hest for me to go to a place that does sedation or even under anesthesia. I had a feeling that could be an option, but I'm nervous all over again. I have never been sedated for any dental procedures. Not sure if it's just better to go under anesthesia instead?

I sedate myself for my nerves. I have tmj and have gotten through it. You will too 🤍

@MellyMel22 Thanks Mel... I've never been sedated so I feel what I'd I'm starting to get jaw pain but I cant fully tell them? I wonder if I should just get fully knocked out?

@Baybreeze I would ask how you can tell them. I think you’ll be okay though.

i don't have any wisdom teeth but i do have some wicked tmj. i can't open my mouth all the way and the dentist wrecks me physically and mentally every single time. if i had the option to go under i would personally take it

I'm kind of scared about my eyes because I'm facing some cataracts surgery in the future.
You'll be in pain if you don't get it done.
Is hard for us with anxiety to trust but I guess that's what it comes down to we have to trust the professionals to have our best interest at heart.

I had sodium pentothal many times with my oral surgeon. It was led on with nitrous oxide. It was a drowsy experience afterwards. But I wouldn't have had it any other way. It's been replaced with...propofol. Which I hear has a softer effect.

@Gibbon I wouldn't have a ride, I'd have to drive myself. Could you wait a few hours there/at the facility , if you had to drive?

@Baybreeze I don't know if a few hours would do it. I actually slept it off when I got home. I mean, you're awake when you get out of the chair. You're just woozy.

I have only had one root canal years ago on an upper molar that cracked so needed a crown as well, but it was done at a regular visit with a numbing shot, my jaw hurt for a day or two after as I had to keep it open for nearly two hours.

Many dentist use nitrous oxide which is reasonably safe. You may need somd anxiolytic as well.

No but they damn well better numb me up.

My wife has had about 5 or 6 root canals. They just numbed her up really well and she never had a problem. The last couple of times the dentist even used nitrous oxide, laughing gas, too.
