Walmart is Getting Tougher on Shoplifters Now…

Two security employees got shot at in a Walmart parking lot when they were chasing after a shoplifter over a week ago in Oklahoma City. And now another incident with a suspected shoplifter trying to run over a security employee with his Mercedes. The police caught him and he’s under arrest.

they don't pay the security staff nearly enough to risk life and limb

I wonder if they hire cop wannabees- hope not - somebody will get hurt and walmart will get sued.

@cherokeepatti yeah, in my corner of the world there is an off duty cop parked in his vehicle and ready for shoplifters. according to the news they bust them from time to time.

I hate thieves and con men worse than politicians and tv preachers (oh wait...con men...)

@Pretzel One time when I was working at Walmart someone went out the door with a tv in a shopping cart, hadn’t paid and the alarm went off. He pushed it to his car and loaded and sped off. By the time he got home the cops were waiting for him and arrested him. Someone got his tag number and the police may have been familiar with this person, they went right to his home.
@cherokeepatti I always report crimes when I see them. Its one less person with those tendencies in my neighborhood.

Most places have strict rules in place about what you can do to pursue shoplifters because of safety reasons. Security cannot do a whole lot but the police CAN.

Most of the walfarts in my city have police security.

A lot of stores do self check out. When will they learn that many customers will miss scanning a few items?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring They have one employee plus cams watching 4 or more customers, pretty sure they don’t catch near all of them
CestManan · 46-50, F
@Crazywaterspring Some of the walmart cameras at SCO here catch that right away.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CestManan I believe the real reason they started closing them at night was to cut back on shoplifting. There were some people at the coming in every night after midnight that the security wouldn’t go after because they were so mean and intimidating
How’s that defund the police and no cash bail working out folks?
So stunning…
So brave

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout this is in Oklahoma though. They don’t have that here.

They either enforce the law or go bankrupt.

The words "Walmart shopper" and "Mercedes driver" don't automatically go together according to what I've heard........😉☺️
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Fluffybull For professional thieves it does. These weren’t ordinary shoplifters, they were a traveling theft ring.
Fluffybull · F
@cherokeepatti I was being a bit facetious.......😉
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@Fluffybull I drive by a lot of "buy here pay here" lots. They sell a lot of pickups and European cars. I guess a lot of people like ten year old ragged out BMWs.

So very sad. I'm so sorry they ran outside the store and were injured.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Oster1 yeah.
Got shot?! I guess Walmart staff are going to be getting danger pay
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP they are too damned cheap to do that.The security needs bulletproof vests and helmets

@Stereoguy I don’t think so

@CestManan I wasn’t working that day. Some of the ones who were said they saw the chase in the store. One was running through the fabric department and didn’t even swerve around the fabric cutting table. Did a jump on top and jumped down and kept running. If anyone had accidentally been in their way they’d stampeded them.
MethDozer · M
I can't believe anyone would chase them outside the store for Walmart. Sad.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@MethDozer No kidding. Not like walmart is going broke.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@CestManan Their sales have gone down this past year. When they do inventory and calculate the missing merchandise the prices will go up for the same items store. This is why prices may be lower in Walmart stores that have recently opened but as years go by and shoplifters increase the prices rise. This is you can buy Tylenol at a store in Ft Smith for half the price as the store I worked at 11 years ago. They will
Lose more paying customers at those stores with higher prices and the shoplifters will run them further into the ground. Paying customers will do price comparisons and shop elsewhere. And self checks have made it even worse especially for things like produce with price switching
