Do you hate self-checkout like I do...looks like retailers are rethinking them

Just saw a news report that grocery stores experienced a 22 per cent increase in loss from either theft or accidental missed or incorrect scans.

Not such a cost saver...so a lot of stores are going back to human cashiers.

I love them, I don't have to wait around in a long line then have to make small talk with the cashier.
Frostcloud · F
usually i prefer them
Pretzel · 70-79, M
@Frostcloud I always feel like I am getting suspicious looks from the employees :)

I prefer them

I like them if I'm only getting a few things, it makes getting in and out a lot simpler. I've got a disabled son and he hates supermarkets. They are a sensory nightmare for those on the spectrum. If I had to wait in a big queue with him, shopping would be so much more of a challenge.
Love self checkout.
We’ve got three stores locally without it…wish they’d get with it.

I prefer self checkout as it saves me at least 80% on my grocery bill.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
It took them long enough to realize customers are giving themselves discounts.
Picklebobble2 · 61-69, M
@Crazywaterspring I guess they were waiting to see which was the bigger saving/loss.
If hiring another employee was greater than the amount of stock loss it would probably be seen as a saving they could cover by increasing their prices.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@Picklebobble2 MBA thinking: "I know they're ripping us off. What is less expensive? Stuff walking out the door or hiring someone to collect money?"

I make a point of interacting with a human.

Sometimes there is an employee there urging people to leave the waiting line and go over to a free self-checkout machine. What I find annoying is that because of my age, they often assume that the self-checkout intimidates me. So they say, "I can help you with it if you like."

I want to tell them, "Child, I was programming computers before you were born", but I don't. Instead, I tell them that I am waiting in line for the human cashier in order to make a statement of principle to the management of the store.

I don't like the guy following me around counting if I've got 15 items or less and not letting me when ten of those checkouts are open with green lights then standing there just watching me the whole time...then the other guy on the way out checking my receipt. It feels awkward and weird.
exexec · 70-79, C
I only use them when I have a few items. Otherwise, I use the friendly cashiers and baggers.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
@exexec when they discount me for doing their job or put me on the payroll I will work the scanner.
HumanEarth · F
I refuse to use them

If a store only has them, i'll leave

I let my wallet do the talking

I rather have a human have a job over a machine and your not getting paid to be the cashier

I suppose my feelings depend on the day 😅

I like them sometimes because I can get everything done a little quicker myself. That said, it is sometimes nice just to have that extra human interaction, especially if you happen to get someone who's talkative and friendly.

Several years ago I went to my neighborhood Kroger early one morning and the door was locked. I thought maybe they had closed forever, this is not a good neighborhood, but the other door was open. At the checkout I asked the clerk why the door was locked. He said a couple thousand dollars worth of food walk out every night. I wanted to say "Good." I hate Kroger.
ineedadrink · 56-60, M
It depends on what & how much I'm buying. I've found that large orders get bogged down and end up needing a human anyway. And need humans for booze or other restricted article purchases.
LavidaRaq · F
Its not my job. I will wait in line.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@LavidaRaq This socialist prefers giving someone a job instead of paying some executives's bonus.
TexChik · F
I do despise that...they can pay people to watch you to make sure you aren't stealing, but they can't pay cashiers? I suspect more tech is coming...like your cart scans whatever you put into it (even weighs things) and then you pay and bag.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
lets be honest, the majority of theft isn't due to errors... it's due to a certain demographic...
anoderod55 · 70-79, M
I bag things better . More careful usually double bag .. Plus can check prices as i go . Kroger has cameras all over the checkout . One above your head too . Didn't know i had lost so much hair . 🤔
I prefer to checkout myself.
BabyLonia · F
I prefer the self scan - so much faster and less faff, straight from the shelf into my bag then onto my shelf. Otherwise it's shelf to basket to counter to bag to shelf ....my apples don't need that much handling.
I hate self checkout 😞
No, I much prefer doing it myself, it's faster that way

I'll be done and back in the car while everyone else is still waiting in a line or raging about 'it's not my job!" or shooting the shit at length with the cashier and being the actual problem ("talkative" and distracted)
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
That's THE first thing I thought of. I mean, does anyone any common sense?
Entwistle · 56-60, M
I have never used one.
SirLirkALot · 46-50, M
I hate having to scan items but I also hate lines
Musicman · 61-69, M
I am definitely not a fan of self checkout.
