Have you ever heard of Highly Sensitive People (HSP's)?

I wonder if I may be one....Alanis Morissette is another example.

HSP's can often feel overstimulated because they feel everything around them, can tune into microexpressions and data others don't, and can have a rich internal life.

Many parents don't know how to handle or parent them, and go way overboard punishing them.

Additionally, because HSP's can see things others can't, they may know that that nice person is really cruel underneath, etc. They may point this out to others, only to be shooed away....Other people eventually find out the HSP was right all along.

Another few things that really strike a cord with me:

- They often job hop because they feel that others don't understand them. I don't job hop, but I do often feel alienated, even as I try to fit in/be an approachable loner.
- They sometimes create a narrative that perhaps "should not" be a narrative, because they notice patterns others don't. When I say these things should not be narratives~the narratives are completely valid and insightful, but other people can forgive and forget more easily because they have not NOTICED those patterns or created those narratives.
- Such narratives, insights, and deep observations can turn to anger and severe disappointment or depression and desperation when no one seems to be listening.
- There needs to be at least SOME positive feedback, or they will link all the negative things, taking them as facts against themselves. If enough people tell them the same things, it must be irrefutable..because it is a narrative.
- This last one makes a ton of sense bc I am INFJ, an ambivert, and my love language is words of encouragement. I also love the written word and writing myself.

Can you relate/see this in me, if you know me?

I've suspected I'm one myself. I'm not sure and don't know what I'd do with a confirmation, so never bothered getting tested or anything though.

I've never heard of HSP being about negative hostile thinking? To read the room, to notice patterns absolutely.
But the critical overly catastrophic thinking sounds like a seperate issue.

The symptoms I heard about HSP

- Extra sensitive to lights and our sounds
- Feels others energy and mental state
- Highly empathic
- See patterns and a red thread in everything especially around human behaviour
- Get exhausted from being around people because we take in everyone's feelings and energies

When it comes to mbti, xNFJ's are known to ask questions and look for several options and then they thread down to one answer. But catastrophic overly negative thinking and holding grudges, that's not really INFJ behaviour, try ISFJ or IxFP.

Ive been typed as INFJ too. The therapist I was seeing was pretty sure from our first meeting. Im not exactly HSP, but I sure own everyones pain. Definitely words of encouragement too for love language.

How have you learned to cope with some of these things?

Most of it sounds familiar. I have seen a dark side in people that the rest of my family didn't. When I tried to warn anyone, I would either get shoved aside or verbally attacked.

@SW-User i can relate so hard..and they think you are just negative, and that bc you are always the one noticing..you are the common denominator.

@foldedunfolding I was accused of attempting to interfere or control things, which wasn't true and hurts worse than being called negative. The worst of it is that in time it was proved that I was right about my parents' dubious friends' dark sides, every time. I guess that's why it still bothers me. If I'd been wrong, I'd be embarrassed and just forget about it.
I suspect Phil Collins is the same way

This may or may not apply. I accept you no matter.

@uncalled4 aw thank you..looked up the wiki link and it appears to be the condition right before schizophrenia..not the same as what i mean..altho both have to do with linking things. HSP's link APPROPRIATE things together..but do it so often that it becomes a problem

@foldedunfolding I have a tendency to label things or categorize them, but I hope that I stop just short of lunacy. Here's another song about sensitivity, ironically not for either sensitive people OR Alanis:
