Just turned 60 today, wondering why me?

I Just turned 60 today and I'm wondering why me? When almost all of the people I've known and loved are gone. Why am I still here? Am I special or just lucky. While serving I should have been dead a hundred times over, I just don't understand am I being punished?

We are all affected by our own actions and those of others around us. It's a combination of both decisions that we make and pure fortune that we are still here. We cannot always dictate the actions of others and that's where the fortune comes in. Most people do survive to old age though, so that chance always favours us. Of course, you may be in a subset of people or in a scenario where the odds change, such as serving in combat as you mentioned.

I haven't served and yet I've put myself at risk many times and been put at risk by others. I've lost people to disease, suicide and murder. I am very aware with each birthday that I've reached an age that people in my life never got to see and for that alone I'm both thankful and sad. I haven't always embraced life but I do feel privileged on account of those who might have embraced it more but never got the chance to

I'm not a big religious, karma, or destiny type of person. I more or less, just believe in putting one foot in front of the other. Cause and effect thinking philosophy. Things do just happen and will, because they just do. There's no way to have full 100% control of the whys, whens, and hows. And sorry if this doesn't help, with your question and for rambling on. So my take on this, is no you're not being punished.

Well, whether you are lucky or being punished is entirely however you perceive it.
If you see it as punishment though. You are making your life harder, less fulfilling.
Even at 60 there are many that have not survived as long as you. I say embrace it and enjoy for as long as you can. The other option is nowhere as appealing or satisfying.
Regardless, I hope you can be at least content.

I would say you’re fortunate. Life is always better than the alternative, and 60 is too young to be dead.

I turn 65 week after next, and I wouldn’t trade.
Happy Birthday. 🥳

Never regret growing old.
It's a privilege denied to many.

Does it really matter whether you’re special or lucky? You’re here, you have another day — live it. If for no other reason than to celebrate the memory of everyone you’ve known and loved.
