Yes,Opaque..i thought it meant 'See through'..it actually means the opposite of transparent and see through. Doh!

Also, "to be warm" is a slang for being homosexual here. When I was about 6-7, I used to hold hands with my friend and someone called us warm. She took an offense but I thought it meant to like someone in general, not in romantic sense, so I replied: I like her, so I'm warm, so what? 😆

Funny. My father argued today that ignorant means something different in English than here. He said it means "to not know." I said it means " to not know and not care about it." Which is more or less universal across languages, I guess. But now I looked up the definition and it really means to be uneducated or lacking knowledge. I somehow missed that.

@bijouxbroussard I concluded it mostly from how it's used here on SW but I kind of didn't realize that it's typically used as wilfully ignorant and that word is there for a reason.
@CrazyMusicLover True, but even by itself the word has come to have a negative connotation. Ignorant and innocent, for example, are not quite synonyms, although both mean to not know or to be unaware.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@bijouxbroussard Yeah, here it means to not care and often suggests arrogance or being aloof.

My Mom laughed at me when I pronounced a word incorrectly. I pronounced sanguine as “san Ge in” and not “San gwen” as it is supposed to be pronounced. Far be it from me to get away with mispronunciation with a Scrabble champion. 🙄
I learned to read at age three. When I read words that I had never heard spoken before, I sounded them out—with hilarious results.

My mother said once when the neighbor boys, twins, were running around in our backyard, knocking things over, she heard me scolding them:

"Stop ! This is anarchie (anarchy) !”
I was about four.

When i was about 6 i used the 'N' word,it appeared in a childhood rhyme.
I assumed it referred to an animal.
My parents went crazy at me.

When I was about 10 my mom told me to go clean my room. I responded with "Why? Do you think I'm gay?"

I had heard someone use that exact sentence in a series that same day, and had never heard the word "gay" before, so I didn't guess the meaning correctly 😅
skmokisses · 46-50, F
@LordBarbossa My eldest daughter did something similar when her and her sister were young. The older called the younger a lesbian. The older, I think 9 at the time, had no idea what the word meant. The younger, probably 3, assumed it wasn't something nice and came running to me crying and saying her sister had called her a 'lezian'. After having a good giggle ....everyone got a lesson on using words we don't know what they mean.
I remember when I was around 12 years old, I said "prick" at the dinner table. I had no idea what it meant. I heard one of the older guys say it about someone. I got my mouth washed out with Ivory soap, and still didn't know what it meant until I asked the same guy the next day.

There are a lot of words people use that I don't understand. I try to avoid them. In fact there are times people say one and I'll Google it so I know what the heck they are talking about

When I was about 12 I learned this sophisticated new word that meant to chew. It was "masticate." I was looking for a chance to use it. One evening at dinner I told my sister to masturbate her food well. As soon as I said I realized I'd gotten it wrong. Then I realized what I'd said.
