That happened to me at school. These popular girls waved at someone directly behind me. I waved and they quite boldly proclaimed "we're not waving at you!"

Thinking quickly i said "i was waving at him (mr nonexistent)" through the window directly behind them.

They were like "oh oh okay"

Im surprised you didn’t go up to them and start a conversation.

Wait until you've done it enough that now when someone waves at you, you automatically check behind yourself to make sure. 😅
