I'm watching Hoarders

This is some of the most shocking television I've ever seen in my life. Most reality shows are just BS but this is real horror.
I know it's an illness but it's still hard to fathom.

The psychologists tend to think all hoarders have been triggered by some traumatic emotional event in their lives and are filling their homes with stuff to fill the void of not having loving relationships. While that may be true I believe that there are different reasons for different people. Some develop it while married and have a family. One woman in Tulsa was a shopaholic and lived in a mansion. She bought so many clothes and household items that she ran out of storage space and had the items piled up in the living areas. Most of her stuff was brand new and with tags still attached. Her husband divorced her over it. Some start collecting cats or other animals and end of being animal hoarders and then collecting stuff and then not discarding their trash or garbage, things build up and breakdowns of bathroom plumbing & appliances worsen it. I have had hoarder neighbors, one was a neat hoarder who’s hobby after she became a widow was frequenting garage and estate sales. She thought she could turn a profit but as time went on she was too tired and eventually got Alzheimer’s. My neighbor spent about 3 months organizing an estate sale for her son & it was amazing how many things she kept finding after she went through the house....a large shed stuffed to the top, the attic and garage too.

A lot of them seem to have abandonment issues. It's like they can't let go of things for fear of losing something else.

@KuroNeko some start out collecting books and magazines because they love to read and become overwhelmed and don’t read what they have. Many times they get stuff because it so cheap at yard sales or find it trashed and rescue it. So many reasons for their accumulations

@cherokeepatti There is a point though where a normally functioning person would have a clear out though I think.

@KuroNeko they get overwhelmed through health problems many times. But yeah you’d think the ones with trash could bring their trash barrel inside and load it up with empty containers and scraps of old food etc to get started but they seem helpless
Hoarders feel empty without maybe knowing it and they feel as if that stuff makes them more...substantial?

I watch that show sometimes, and just can't understand how anyone can live in such filth and mess. Geez....makes me sick to my stomach.

@Stereoguy you know I have a helper now, I think the boy can help me sell things if he is willing to go with me. He can watch the stuff so I can go to the restroom and get drinks or whatever. It might be fun to try again. He is very helpful too. I had a problem with my little clothing rack blowing over in the wind, and when several people approach my stuff at the same time he could watch it for me.. I will wait until the mask mandates expire and maybe try it and see what I can make.
