I gave my friends twins £20 each in an envelope along with some pretty hair clips and sweets. The kids opened the gift. Threw the money on the floor and put the gifts aside. I said to their mum that their house was piled up with toys and to start them a bank account. She later told me the kids kicked up a fuss, and she had to drive them to the toy shop to spend the money. Then she had to spend more money as mine didn't cover the cost of what they chose. I felt very angry and won't bother again. I don't have kids either, so it's not even as if she buys for my kids.

I wouldn’t call Christmas and Santa not being a big deal an indication that they are spoiled. Being spoiled would be rattling off a mile long list in spite of receiving things through the year. I kind of like that they are not taking advantage of all the hype.

@Pinkstarburst The point is they have so much they don't even know what to ask for. Ruins the magic of Santa Clause, in my opinion

You can thank commercialism for that. 🤷🏻♂
I wasn't pounded everyday, for hours, over two decades, with commercials growing up.
You can't want, what you don't know about. Marketing is directly targeted at kids today.

Not wanting Christmas presents means they're entitled? I mean sure they get stuff now in days regardless of Christmas but doesn't mean they're entitled. All that means is that stuff is easily accessible now. My cousin was a teen when he started making avatars online and he can make them for 200 dollars sometimes. Kids are smart now in days, I don't think it equates to being spoiled though.
People living better and comfortable is a sign of progress, that's bound to happen. Christmas becoming obsolete is just more of a sign of a technological age than anything else.
I would say entitlement is more of an attitude, for me, kids can get what they want all year long as long as they don't have an attitude. Once they do though, that is when it starts. But you never know if the kids are working or doing other things.
It's just more of a sign that everything is more available rather than reading by candlelight anymore.

@SatanBurger I see all too many parents give in to whining and tantrums. They act like it's an obligation to give their bratty kids whatever they demand.

We weren't allowed to keep our presents (Christmas, birthday) more than a few days unless it was something useful like clothing.

@LetsDance Yeesh, that is a trip to hell for those parents, so evil. Were they on drugs? I bet they needed the money for something they wanted.

Still a big deal for me; I'd like a four pack of Hobgoblin King and some of that peace and quiet you hear about.

I don't know many kids that get things year round.
Christmas is outdated and should be put out to retire. It's over commercialised and just an excuse for people to behave disgustingly to each other because they're in an enforced lockdown because someone decided it was a "special" day.

@jackieash27 I love Christmas. It's a holiday of love for most people. I especially love the decorations..
@Cloud7593 "love"? It causes more stress particularly for housewives than it's worth. And as for relationship breakdowns....

probably the same for canadian kids

Christmas is all about selling things. Completely commercial. Make them cookies and a new hat, don't buy anything.

Good observation 👍🏻
Back in the day we had the Cinnamon Bear at xmas time, instead of candy canes he gave out little cinnamon cookie bears :)
