In the United States, I tend to think of people named Catherine as from the East. Once you head westward, the spelling is usually Katherine.
(I did once meet a Catherine in Minnesota -- it turns out she was named after an aunt in Florida!)

I like Catherine better than Decatheter. While Catherine shortened becomes Cathy, Decatheter shortened becomes Decathy.
