I relay on my friends, my partner and I get professional help. I do group therapy as well. I ask for help as soon as I'm feeling a bit off. I don't risk letting myself slip back into a dark place. I have to much to live for.

I don't think you ever get over it, you just find a better way to deal with it and not let it control everything

@Cigarguy101 right...one doesn't get over it, but find ways to mitigate the damage.

I have had severe abuse for decades growing up...I can identify. I'm finding this new book to be helpful, called "CBT for dummies". (Cognitive Behavioral therapy). It's Def interesting. CBT is a method of observing our trauma or thoughts in different ways to find peace or healing. Like, 'Im so inadequate " can be rethought into "I have done many things pretty well."

@Coralmist ACT..see my answer.

@Wiseacre I was curious why you had mentioned CBT was not good for trauma?
Wiseacre · F
@Coralmist CBT focuses on changing thought patterns, while traumas need deep emotional work and safety. CBT doesn't deal with the core of one's pain.

I cannot pretend to know how your experiences have affected you, ai can tell you as a survivor of Abuse, Betrayal and a myriad of other issues, I am able to move forward by counting my Blessings and giving all thanks to GOD.

@Wiseacre Absolutely.

@Iwillwait thanks, i'm a christian also.

@darkmere1983 don't need to be christian...anyone can practice gratitude.

First of all, I'd recommend trauma informed therapy. Meanwhile, read The Body Keeps Score. I've learned a lot from this book and its valuable self help strategies.

I have a little experience here. So listen up... YOU DONT!.. Everything that has happened to you thusfar has informed who and what you have become and there is no undoing any of it. So forget it..
What you can do is decide what you will do tomorrow with everything you know.. They say the abused abuse..But an abuse vuctim can also know better than anyone how simple validation and support can bring out the shine they never got and decide that was who they were going to be. Decide to do the very opposite of the lessons you learned. You may not always get it right. But sometimes all it takes is not to be wrong,...😷
Wiseacre · F
@whowasthatmaskedman that would not work for most ppl.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Wiseacre No. I agree. It does take a certain strength to rebel against ones own history.. But it exists and can save a few. 😷

Sounds from what u said CPTSD. Did u get a diagnosis?
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
@Wiseacre my diagnosis is officially a personality disorder, but the 'psychiatric team' acknowledge my ptsd symptoms also.
Wiseacre · F
@darkmere1983 I see.

@Wiseacre thanks for your information.

You forgive it. To forgive means to 'let it go'.
