What category of stocks does anyone recommend?

This fits pretty well with advice from advisors on my 401k and IRAs, though I'm in a more conservative focus than you should be, given differences in our ages. Still a less predictable environment in the markets than even normally exists.
Doing your research if not getting professional guidance is more important now as a result.

I'd stay with blue chips, just to be safe. Or maybe a good mutual fund?

In my retirement accounts I have my financial advisor handle it. I also have a dividend stock portfolio.

Financials - visa, mc and amex. Financials, and insurance companies are swimming with cash. This float is invested from minute one while their claim payments come in (and out) in dribs and drabs

I always prefer having diversified approach. Include sectors/industries you are sure about.
