Today is half day but only for the students. The teachers have to stay for meetings. That’s totally unfair. How can I get out of it?

So when they announced that it was half day which is today I was excited until the assistant staff said teachers and staff are required to work a full day and have a meeting with our teem after the kids leave and still take a lunch break. It’s mandatory. When we all got that you know yesterday, I was bummed. One of the coworkers was right. So Wednesday she said it’s half day Friday which is today. I was excited and happy and so was she. I said we’re getting out early. She said, “Well the STUDENTS, some stay for aftercare, do but I don’t know about us. We have a meeting so we still have to work a full day.”
I told her, “Are you serious? We will have to work a full day?” Then she said, “We’ll that’s how it is, us staff stay behind and work and have meetings. Well, teachers stay longer but still. Hopefully they’ll let us out a little earlier.”
Today is Friday and I’m still happy it is but I gotta get out of staying until 3:30.
We (assistant teachers/behavior coaches) usually clock out at 3:00, but today we have a staff meeting from 1:00-3:30pm.
The teachers have to say until like four or 4:30pm. Man I’m jealous of the students. I’m one of the assistant teachers. I’m 19 going on 20! I have a life too you know!
Well that’s how it is. You signed a contract and you agreed to the position you have. All staff are required to stay back for meetings and staff development. You don’t get to leave whenever you want. You’re a staff, not a child. Suck it up buttercup. Get used to it. If you wanna be a teacher or assistant, you have to deal with going to staff meetings/staff meetings. We’re supposed to do these things. It’s very important. It doesn’t matter how old the staff is, you still gotta do your job. I’m a support staff at a school and we have to say for staff development. Buck up.

This is a job you agreed to work. All teachers and aids are required by law to have meetings and conduct trainings. Professional development and credentials are a must. It was strange you call it unfair. It is your job. 🤷🏼‍♂️

You cant get out of it because its an part of your job , I know it sucks but unless you suddenly fall ill in the meeting or before or fake it or have an medical appoitment then you cant get out of it

This is your job. You aren't a kid or a student. A LOT of the time that kids have "half days" its because teachers and staff have trainings or meetings. Of course as an adult and staff member you won't have the same schedule as a literal child. You aren't one.
Unless its a half day due to weather or a holiday break, you will almost never get the same time off as the students. You are paid and held to different expectations because you are an adult being paid to do a job and fulfill your duties.

@LaylaTheTallGirl that frown will turn upside down when you get that first paycheck. Lol
The beginning of a school year is always hectic . I start the day after Labor Day .

@ItsSteve yes…. I get reminded that so many times I’m tired of it. My older siblings were in the 30s remind me of that. I’m autistic not brainless.

@LaylaTheTallGirl Never said you were. And, you know, going from school to work is a major step and adjustment.

@ItsSteve it is. Adulthood isn’t what I thought it would be. People expect for from you and if anything happened the adults are to blame. When I have meltdowns people roll their eyes but if it’s a child they have empathy.
