Why won't the drill bit remove the screw?

I know this may be hard to troubleshoot online but

***The screw is NOT stripped.
***The drill and drill bit DO go together.
***100% sure the drill is not in reverse

When I go to remove the screw, the bit bounces off it, so I cannot remove the screw.
This happens even when j go as slowly as the drill allows.

The bit retracts into the drill and bounces off the screw...

What am I doing wrong?

I have probably near 100 screws that need to be removed and I will not do them all by hand

The screw is hardened steel..
You need to buy a screw extractor bit..
It threads itself into the screw and unscrews the shaft.

@SW-User thank you. I will visit home depot again tommorow.
So what are drill bits for then? I thought they removed screws?
It was something we already had at home. I didn't see a flat head bit so I bought one

@iamnikki
Drill bits are basically for drilling holes, the screws are pretty hard metal and a drill bit will have a very hard time drilling into one..
You'll end up with a bigger hole and need to tap it for a bigger screw..
Better to remove them and just replace them

Can I ask why you are taking them out?

@SW-User can I inbox?

@iamnikki sure..

@iamnikki wait. You’re using a drill bit?????

A drill bit is used to make a hole, not take a screw out. I see you said it’s a flat bit. That’s tough. I hope the inventor of the flathead screw died a slow painful death of jock itch. @iamnikki

@Chevy454 so flat bits are also to drill holes?
What do I need then? The extractor?
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
No. A flat bit for a drill looks like this.

@Chevy454 right. That's what it is. But I'm asking is it for drilling holes? Since it's not taking out the screw?
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
@iamnikki no. It’s not for drilling a hole
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Chevy454 ok. I've asked numerous times now. What is the purpose of the object in the picture you just posted
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
@iamnikki To take a screw out that looks like this.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Chevy454 what is the purpose of the object you posted previously
Chevy454 · 46-50, M
@iamnikki that is the type of bit to get this screw in or out.

@iamnikki if you are taking out screws like the one pictured above try using a simple screwdriver, a drill with a screwdriver attachment will be very difficult to control with small screws on a cabinet hinge..

Use these instead just make sure you use a size that fits well in the screw slot.
Press hard and turn counter clockwise..slowly..
The drill is much too fast, you're going to wreck the slot.

If you're using a drill it should be used at the slowest speed

@SW-User the hand screwdriver won't work for me. It's over 100 screws and I have neck and shoulder problems/pain.
I developed a super stiff neck, and a knot in my shoulder area just trying to get this one screw out.
In so much pain that I'm in bed at 9pm. Thanks for the help

@iamnikki
I understand..
And you're very welcome, sorry it didn't work out.
