The best way to project confidence is to just be who you are. If you're timid and shy when it comes to communicating, then that's who you are and that's absolutely fine. You'll still appear as a more confident person like that than if you were to fake it and put up front. And it will give you the space for those things to develop naturally into what you want them to be.
