I think I know the sort of place you're looking for... thatched roof, oaken floors, vines creeping up trellessed walls. Flower beds bloom beneath the pigmy windows, a drive of shingle merges with a dusty road. Standing proud; a rusting, blue pickup. Follow the ramshackle fence to the chickens in the coop. Step in through the creaking door, paintings of glorious landscapes and deepest eyes adorn the passage, all around, your battered books lay strewn. Well read, but musky with the wisdom of ages. And there, against a ray of sun pearing through the pane, sits your mum, a smile on her face. From the cosmic time eternal, you find your slice of heaven; lord knows, you deserve it.
I was just thinking of you.. now I'm glad I dared wonder if you too, had found your way here. 😌

expensive as hell... if you build one, try not to install lights if your tight on money... just use candles, if it's a cottage in the country, it'd probably feel amazing not having to worry about lights... or the electricity bill sky rocketing if you leave one on when you fall asleep, as i don't know the exact price, i think it'd be around the price datboi listed.. possibly higher.. if you do build it... i might just die of jealousy xD

We have a TV show where people do this sort of thing although it tends to be on a bigger scale.
You would need to buy the land and get planning permission and then factor in all the cost of labor and the actual material, a company that does this would give you their quote and what options you have.
How long is a piece of string? It depends where and the site.

It covers a large range, even for a cottage, depending upon the area and distance to amenities. Wales would be less expensive as would parts of Scotland, or areas in England that are a bit more remote in terms of transportation network. Detached properties can be expensive in popular areas, such as the Southwest or Cotswolds.
