I am moderately educated/credentialed but worked a full career among highly credentialed people. I can't say that for the most part the higher credentials helped them be more effective at their work, though in some cases I would say it was essential... though I reached (mostly) their level of competence through experience.
I am deeply thankful that I got a general education along with my more specific technical education. The philosophy, literature, anthropology, language, etc. that I was exposed to broadened my mind a great deal in a very good way. My highly technical studies (math/physics/engineering) allowed me to get a good job, but might have undermined my humanist perspective had I not had the other to balance me.
I don't think *any* education is truly *useless* though some of it might be pretty wrongheaded, and some of it might be not particularly marketable in our current economy.
I did not go to University to get a better job, though it *did* lead to one... I had a couple of mini-careers before my education and either of them could have lead me to a modestly comfortable life without any additional education, but again, I am thankful for all of the art, literature, culture, philosophy that I was exposed to at University.
