Assault rifle owners, what makes you feel like you need to own one?

I’m not attacking you guys but I’m just curious as to under what circumstances you think you’ll need even an nonautomatic rifle when all you need for self defense is really a pistol if you have to have one. I don’t mean hunting rifles I mean things like ar15s.

I don't own guns as I don't live in the USA, but I like guns and I would probably own several types if I lived in the US... I doubt the people who buy an AR-15 or similar weapon is because of any "practical reason". It's like asking "why some people drive a sports car when having an average, cheaper car would take them from A to B just the same?" Because they want to own such thing, because it's "cool", it "feels awesome" etc. Not for any practical reasons, although people may try to justify themselves with something vaguely "practical" and "rational"...

@MethDozer only to those that have just seen it in the news......i was shooting an ar-style rifle (there's not as many armalights floating around as the news would say) well before the taboo....it's just a gun. Personally i prefer the Kalashnikov platform

@Notanymore The AK has it too. You realize how many people know only got or get into gins because of movies or their favorite video games? A whole lot.A whole lot.

And there might not be a she lot of actual Armalite made AR's but there are a lot of AR pattern rifles out there.

@MethDozer the people i know and shoot with....and talk guns with and trade guns with and the people that have been involved with guns for a long time before your crusade would disagree with you......but what do they know against some guy that read it in the new york times or saw it on CNN?

@Notanymore Cars are machines and have mystique. Cameras are machines and have mystique (in my opinion)... Not for everyone for sure, everyone is different... Like for some people sport cars are "dumb" and others love them... But me for example I'm draw to certain "machines" as if they are pieces of art... And no it doesn't have anything to do with any urge to "kill" or hurt anyone... I appreciate machines built with extreme precision, it's a thing for me...
