Should I avoid risking my life like this, from now on?

So today I ended up kicking an exposed, possibly live, wire near the road. The ground was moist and muddy, and as most of you probably know, it’s dangerous to go anywhere near a live wire, even if the ground is dry. The reason I kicked it was because I couldn’t tell if it was hanging, or fed into the ground by design. So I kicked it—it was hanging. So I got back into my car and called the fire department.

I know I could have killed myself, but I did it because I know that someone else could have died if I didn’t do anything about it. And unbeknownst to me at the time, the area was actually a school bus stop for children.

The wire was either dead or I was just very lucky. I’m fine. But for future reference, is it a bad idea to do that or something akin to it?
