How to get over the fear of drowning? Because of it, I was too afraid to learn how to swim.

I don't know how to swim because my fear of drowning... How can I get over this so that I can finally learn how to swim?

Go with a strong swimmer to the pool, and have them teach you a couple of basic things, namely how to float on your back, and how to doggie paddle. I know what it's like to have the fear of drowning, but in me it manifested as a general fear of water slides/rides. I taught my self to swim shortly after the last time I almost drowned, 27 years ago. And, have them teach you in the shallow end of the pool. Are you ok with water? I've never minded water, just water slides and rides!

That's why I don't like water slides or rides, the water hitting me almost always reminds me of the last time I almost drowned. Knowing that I know how to swim makes it a bit better, but I doubt I'll ever truly overcome my water-ride phobia.

You know what I do to make my phobia not have such a hold on me? Once or twice a decade, I can gather enough courage and go on a water ride. It scares me, but I feel good after, proud of myself ya know? LOL!

And I'd suggest getting goggles for the water in your eyes.

@PeanutsauntieP1982 Thank you, and I guess I am... Sort of. Like I can stand still in a pool or ocean but I'd get anxious about moving into the deeper parts of it. I just don't like water going into my face because it messes with my eyes a lot to the point where I can't see until I wipe them off.

Cg, it's not easy to face ones fears, and depending on how bad whatever experience was, and the persons general disposition, it may be impossible for them to face their fears. Don't assume that because one person can face their fear, that everyone else can too.

@PeanutsauntieP1982 yeah that makes sense, I hope this summer I can get my mom to help me out with this again. I guess I could do what you did. I just hate cold water, even in heat. Weird? I know...

Not really, considering your phobia. But the thing with phobias I discovered is; the more you face them, the smaller they become. And if it helps, use one of those pool noodles. : - )

I just try to lend a helping hand when I can. Plus, with a phobia like the one we have, of drowning, it's nice to know you're not the only one. : - )

@PeanutsauntieP1982 yeah that's true, thank you :) but I don't think my mom will let me get one

@peanutsauntieP1982 no, because they all know how to swim, and that's really nice of you
