Did anyone else grow up getting spanked with a switch?

I did a few times… and I still remember how much it stung. It even broke the skin. I’ll be honest—while I do believe in spanking when done thoughtfully and in love, I personally draw the line at using a switch. To me, it goes too far. There are more respectful, effective ways to discipline that don’t involve that kind of pain.

Now let me say this: I love my parents deeply. They are incredible, God-fearing people. My mom has the biggest heart you could imagine—she’s my best friend. And my dad is someone I can count on for anything, no matter what. I know they always wanted the best for us, and I hold no bitterness. I just think it’s important to reflect on how we were raised and how we want to raise our own children.

I’m genuinely curious—what was discipline like in your home growing up? Did anyone else experience the switch? And how do you feel about it now?

Let’s talk 💬👇

Not the switch except for one time when camping but my dad had a cane which had much the same effect and was very painful.

No, I didn't.
I do have a memory that's like not fun lol so I know I wouldn't ever replicate that. I don't even believe in spanking either. It doesn't do anything but teach fear and suppression. Just a short term fix and lazy and damaging parenting in my opinion.

There's been made studies on this topic and it's damaging on the child using that sort of raising them by corporal punishment. It's a lack of abilities to teach your child life by guidance and inspiration. The worst are those trying to tell one that they didn't get damaged by being raised like that. Yes you did, you think this is a right way to raise your child. Actually it's criminal behavior in several countries.
@SUPERVlXEN the ones who claim to have not been affected are usually emotionally stunted and lack the self awareness to even see how it's impacted them. Children are learning how to navigate the world, their unregulated emotions are not personal attacks so why treat them as such? It's teaching them they're too much before they even have a chance to understand themselves.

I don't get how people can believe any spanking of a kid can bring anything positive out of the situation. I really find it upsetting and that those parents shouldn't be allowed to keep their kids. They risk damaging their own kids for life with deep traumas.

Never thankfully. My mum used to smack us with a variety of things, a slipper, a spoon or a hairbrush depending on what she had but never a switch. I don't hold it against them, I grew up with manners and respect. It was just how things were back then.

@PatientlyWaiting25 don’t hold it against mine either but a switch is not okay and shouldn’t ever be used— imo 💜
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@TiaRose yeah, I can't see anything that would warrant that either.

I got the belt and paddle plenty of times, but not the switch. I think that's more of a rural thing.
The switch is too dangerous and too painful. My mother, when I was just barely 5 years old, planned to trim a shrub branch that she cut and to turn it into an operational "current spanking implement." I managed to discard it and it was never properly trimmed to make it safe to spank me with. They knew who was responsible for its demise but I was never punished with it and it turned slowly brown and I got to stare at it every time I walked down the stairs to leave the garage apartment.
Switch, the cord from an old electric iron(this most often), hand, glass ashtray, house shoe, beaten with a belt (regular and buckle end depending on who did the beating) etc.
MrsRachelEvans · 31-35, F
@DancingStarGoddess the electric cord really raises sore welts.
@MrsRachelEvans Yes, it did.
MrsRachelEvans · 31-35, F
@DancingStarGoddess I have had similar. I was actually glad the next time my dad used his cane!

I didn’t get the switch but I did get brush, belt, and spoon. Hurt like crazy but never broke the skin.
HordeCory · 31-35, M
My mother spanked me with her bare hand and wooden spoon. She tried the switch for a while but not long enough for me to get it. I saw my brothers get it though.

Degbeme · 70-79, M
My mother didn`t wast time with any of that, she had hands and wasn`t afraid to use them. We`d get a clobber up the side of the head if we needed it. She was a small woman, but she was damn quick.

Hmm sounds like it would be pretty effective 🥺
