If that was in fact the reason, then it says more about those who thought of it and decided to abolish cp. My opinion is that it was an early version of wokism. Hasn't done us many favours has it? Schools now exist for the convenience and amusement of the pupils while parents have lost all authority (or abdicated their authority).

@Caned4doz You'd bring it back if you could?

@SensibleJulie I wouldn't advocate a return a cp with the same degree of 'freedom' that it once had, but I do think it is one tool in the disciplinary toolbox. Put aside for a moment the age-old argument of big adults hitting little kids and remember that kids lack empathy and self-control. Sometimes, they need the quick sharp wake-up call. I grew up with cp at home and at school. I've never considered that I was abused or traumatised by it. That may be because I was always made well aware why I was being punished. That may not have been the case for all.
@Caned4doz I think that if it's allowed back into schools, it must be approved through school by school parental vote first, and then waivers signed by those parents who approved it to allow their child(ren) to be paddlewhacked.
@NativePortlander1970 I wouldn't have a problem with that.
@Musicman Neither would I, we now see the end results of the banning of discipline, even in homes, Dr. Spock created a massive glibal nightmare with his book, Dare to Discipline.
@NativePortlander1970 I have never read it. What did he say in it?
@Musicman He said spanking stifles the creativity and self esteem of a child 🙄
@NativePortlander1970 Darn! I guess I must have been the exception. I mean I only retired at 53. 🤷♂️
@Musicman He wrote the book in the 40's, just after WW II ended, it was targeted to the returning Soldiers and Sailors knowing they would have combat related anger issues.
@NativePortlander1970 I see. My dad was a Korean War combat veteran. He wore my butt out a few times with his belt.
@Musicman My dead maternal uncle did three tours in Vietnam as a Junior Infantry Officer in the US Army, he was forced into retirement after a third rejected promotion from Major to Lt. Colonel, because cps was called by neighbors and too many calls into the Colonel's office for reprimand over allegations of physical and emotional abuse of my cousins, two of his three sons and only daughter, she's a month older than I am.
@NativePortlander1970 I am so sorry to hear that ☹️
@Musicman That was in 1986, he died in 1991 from a heart attack, the family blamed Agent Orange, never mind he ate nothing but deep fried fish like candy and drank beer like a fish.

@MartinII I absolutely agree. The cane was used at my school but there were other forms of punishments too, such as lines or copying out pages from the Bible, yard duty and of course detention. Hated all of those, in my mind they were soul destroying. It was far better to just get a telling off and bend over for a few sharp whacks with the cane. Over and done with, get on with life, hopefully a little wiser.

@Caned4doz we got lines that could be tedious and what you say is true touch your toes six of the best painful but it was finished 🤷♂️
