Interesting question…
It’s kinda similar to the question; “Do you love the gifts [blessings] or the giver [God]?”
I’m an American, and I love America, but I think many people in the USA cherish (really idolize) America/the American flag more than the providence/resources/great people, inventions, & documents/liberty & justice/overall success that God has gifted America with.
As an example: the US “Pledge of Allegiance”: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Shouldn’t allegiance be given to God?

@Similarname agree they conflate nationhood with sainthood and vice versa. to me, our constitution is a law and different than faith. but, i can't speak for anyone else here.
