You're lucky to have encountered a loving, truly helpful group. Good for you and great that you're not finding this conflicting with your belief in science.

@Northwest
Indeed I was. Very much so

Ontheroad · M
I get it and nicely written. I don't go to church and I don't believe in god, but when I was a youngster the only place in our small town that offered anything for kids was the mission and the Franciscan Brothers.

They took an old building and turned it into a place filled with board games, ping-pong, a pool table and weights and opened it to the kids regardless of their faith or lack thereof. They also, I learned while going there, feed the homeless.

I never "got religion" because of it, but I did feel at home there, cared about and there were always snacks and something to drink (bonus!). It was a safe oasis for us kids and it's where I learned to respect those who did believe, even if I didn't.

@Ontheroad
It's not a place to hang out or socialize for me. After the initial hello and find goodbye, I don't really talk to any one.
I take it seriously as a place for instrospection and a place to look into myself and the things I could do better. I also get a sense on communion with something bigger.
It could all be in my head, and that's alright.
And like you say, I do have a certain respect for those people because they help. And because they are just good people.
Thank you for taking the time to write.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@CookieCrumbs I liked that too.
Ontheroad · M
@CurrentName I get what you meant, but even though I'm not a believer I wanted to say there is a lot of good in the people who are - that you can be a nonbeliever and still see and respect those who are and the good that comes from their beliefs.
robbie2499 · 61-69, F
This is so well written. Beautiful.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@robbie2499 Thank you very much..
I really appreciate your answer. If the rest of the comments were all bad, your answer alone, is enough to make me ignore them
Thsnk you
robbie2499 · 61-69, F
@CurrentName What a wonderful compliment! Sincerely, thank you.

Oh no
Thank you!!!

You need to know Jesus. He is a wonderful counsellor.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Arrow17
Maybe one day I'll get there. Believe me it would be a lot easier if I just believed.
Maybe one day my friend.
Arrow17 · F
@CurrentName You can make a decision today. It may be too late for later.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Arrow17
How do you make yourself believe something.
What you just said there I call "the gospel of fear" All that does is making me feel forced and manipulated and It doesn't work.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
I’m a churchgoer myself, and my Catholic faith is an important part of my life, so I approach this from a different perspective. That said, I really appreciate the honesty and authenticity in what you’ve written.

What struck me most is your recognition of the kindness you received when you needed it most. Beliefs may differ, but compassion, generosity, and a sense of belonging are things we can all understand and value.

Whether someone calls it faith, community, compassion, or simply human decency, being welcomed, supported, and cared for can be life-changing. Not everyone needs all the answers to appreciate the peace and connection they find there.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@CookieCrumbs
I can usually come up with response that would either expand their thoughts, or maybe come up with some extra awesome or funny remark

Theres nothing I can add to what you wrote to make it any better. It made me a bit emotional.
Thdnk you.

On a lighter note, and I don't mean any disrespect.

I grew up in a very strict religion. No cutting hair or shaving legs.

Then we discovered The Catholic Church. Girls were friendly and would talk and joke with us. So me and a couple friends started going to "The Catholics" as we called them. 😊

Thank you very much for you touching response.

One day, as I was struggling with my faith and my believing I thought ...

Wait a minute, I'm sure half of these people here are probably struggling with believing.

That's when it hit me, that it doesn't matter..

If God doesnt exist, my believing is not going to make it real..

And if He does exist my not believjng is not going to make it disappear.

What matters is how I live, if I help others and if I have peace.

That's a nice story about your friend.

"True life's best ftiend'. You are lucky to have found each other.

Thsnk you again so much for writing.

So, you go to a Protestant church for your social club.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@lomaine Sigh
I never said I was good person. 😊
Thank you for your oh so enlightening comment.
lomaine · 26-30, M
@CurrentName never claimed you did just pointing out a logical fallacy
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@lomaine
Ok 😊
DareDevil · 46-50, M
Well written. I’m glad there was a church there to reach out and help you. Not all churches are bad.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@DareDevil oh no, of course.
I'm not much into the mega church gospel of financial success kinda thing, but besides the preacher, I think there are still good people there.
You're right!
I'm glad they were there too

Thank you for stopping by

If there's one thing church does well it's community.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Pikachu
True.
Waveney · M
I can get on board with that. I am an atheist too, but your local church can also be a community.
peterlee · M
Rarely do you find the warmth like that in a church. The people there are full of the love of God. Paul says we should pray for this. You are experiencing it.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@peterlee Thank you my friend
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
I'm a person of faith. However, I couldn't care less if the person next to me is not. It just doesn't bother me and can't imagine why it should. That goes for politics, music, films, you name it. Don't agree with me? OK, onward and upward.

I usually get something out of going to a service at church or a synagogue. Sure, we hear all the time about hypocritical religious people, but my experience runs counter to that--I usually meet pleasant people.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@uncalled4
Same here. We are all on our own journey. Whatever they believe in or why they go there is not my concern. It's their journey.
Adstar · 56-60, M
Nice post man. You sound like a reasonable person.. I hope one day you come to believe in God and believe Jesus and trust in The Way He made to have you saved forever and ever.. Hoping you get the Max Eternal Value out of your experiences with a church..
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Adstar
Thsnk you.
Who knows. Maybe someday I will. It would definitely make things easier.
Thsnk you for stopping by and commenting my friend.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I'm glad this church functions like it should you're seeing a better example than many people see.
If you believed in God you could almost say He put you in this church so you could see how people conduct themselves when they follow the truth they say they believe in.
I do not believe the basic principles of math or science expels God from the equation.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Justmeraeagain
I completely agree with your last sentence. To say that science and spirituality are mutually exclusive is like saying that Love is not real because we can't quantify it.
And about "God" putting me there. Who knows.
Something did.
JanBos2 · 61-69, M
These people have understood why christianity is there. I admire your wish to show us the difference between Words and deeds.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@JanBos2
yes they have!
I might not agree with everything they say but they are good people.
I see no reason to debate or argue about what they believe.
GoldnJulz · 46-50, F

Do I believe in the Man up in the sky? Not really.

You mean you don’t really believe in Elon Musk ?!
GoldnJulz · 46-50, F
@CurrentName oh ok 👌👍. Carry on then…
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@GoldnJulz 🤟🏽

There's something to the ritual, no matter what you believe/don't believe. I go to Buddhist Temple for the same feeling. Catholic Mass is also enjoyable.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@faery
Exactly!!!
😊
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
Do you pretend like you're a believer when you go to church or worship? If you do you are in good company. Probably 90% of the people around don't believe it either. Or at least they have serious question it.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@MoveAlong
No I don't pretend . They know how I feel.
About your 90 percent comment. I'm tempted to say the number might be bigger.
Dainbramadge · 56-60, M
Well there are definitely worse places to spend a few hours a week.

Has anyone questioned your faith?

Have you thought about how you might handle it if the topic of faith comes up?

Just curious.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Dainbramadge
They don't have to question it. I've told them.
You didn't mention how long you've been doing this. It would be cool to have included that.
CurrentName · 51-55, M
@Magicianzini Aw thank you so much. I'm happy you liked it.
