why do people treat the bible as a text book.

When did it happen that the bible turned into a text book? It's a spiritual book based on metaphors. Who would read Cinderella and treat it like nonfiction? "What's the moral of the story" is what we should be looking at

@Millerdog, all of the biblical stories, except for a couple in the Apocrypha, illustrate one or more of the real Ten Commandments (Exodus 34:11-26) in action. The miracles are based on Exodus 34:10.

The stories are just mnemonic devices to get the listener, or the reader, to make the association with the correct Ten Commandment and to show the consequences of obeying or disobeying the commandment. That is why some of the stories don't make logical sense because the reader does not know that. It is easy to understand the stories if you tie them to the right real Ten Commandment.

@SW-User exactly my point. that's why it should not be taken literary.

@SW-User you can but most often just a small portion of a story is taken out of context. So we don't always get the full story. I guess i just don't take everything so seriously like some. I find what i like and leave the rest

The bible is a collection of moral lessons that aim to teach, it's not a biography
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@DrSunnyTheSkeptic
I still admit that at least partially the bible tries to teach something
There are some useful bits of information that is timeless and of benefit to most people at one time or another but they are not in the stories. The books of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Wisdom, and Sirach are well worth reading and thinking about.

In fact, the best advice you can ever give a child is found in Proverbs 1:8-19 = https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=proverbs+1%3A8-19&version=NLT

Even if you hate everything in the Bible you should teach your children that one passage because it could save their lives.

Immoral and contradictory.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Sharon Of course it is. Some people claim that the Bible teaches morality. It does not.

With home schooling , it is a text book. Most of the time it’s the only class they pass.

The Bible shows the way to go to heaven, not the way the heavens go.

Galileo Galilei

@Millerdog That guy, Galileo, had some ideas.

@ElRengo he was a genius

@Millerdog
No doubt.
Also an emblematic one.

Because it’s the only book many of them have ever read
Sharon · F
@redredred Those who treat it as a text book have probably never read it, they've just been spoon-fed a few cherry-picked quotes from it.
It's meant to depict real events though, unlike Cinderella.
Some parts I'm sure but it's not comparable to Cinderella. Many people believe that parts of the bible are based on true accounts. I'm not an expert but I went to church when I was growing up. It's not really funny to me st all. @Millerdog

@Millerdog
Maybe some parts have some truth like certain people or places
So do the Harry Potter books. King's Cross Station, London is a real place for example.

I agree, Cinderella is much better written.

The bible is history, and includes hundreds of stories. It's used as text in bible study classes, which are used to help people understand the bible.
