ABCDEF7 · M

Beneath the cold and starless sky,
I close my eyes, though none pass by.
No blanket soft, no warmth to keep,
Just broken dreams as I drift deep.
The pavement rough, my pillow stone,
I sleep alone, no place to own.
The world moves on, yet I stay still,
A child’s heart too tired to will.
I sleep with hunger, wrapped in fear,
A whisper calls, "Tomorrow's near."
But for tonight, I long to rest,
And let my soul escape its chest.
The winds may howl, the night may scream,
Yet here I lay, lost in a dream.
For when I wake, the cold will bite,
But in this sleep, I take my flight.
Tomorrow comes with silent dread,
But tonight, I dream of bread.
