One of the purpose of meditation is to remove your focus on anything your mind can think about. They ask you to try concentrating on your breath because your mind don't have a control over that. The purpose is to stop thinking anything. If you are able to do that without even concentrating on your breath, it's very good, but most can't do that. You can also try concentrating on you heart beat or on nothing.

There’s a lot of different meditation techniques. What you describe is one of them: connecting to your body and environment. Generally the idea is still learning how to be at ease with being bored though (unstimulated) lol by teaching yourself to turn off your thoughts.

I think you can focus on whatever you want as long as you focus.

What is your purpose with meditation? What is the tradition that you are practicing in? Words blur distinctions...

Sounds around you as in you'll be playing music that aids the meditation ?
