You are not a terrible person just for doing that - you are suffering from a obsessive compulsive disorder
Chatting & messaging addiction is a social disease
Just change your sim card, block internet and keep yourself away from the compulsive act. You will need 1)some plan of activities to pass the time and 2) some well wisher friend/relative whom you can phone or talk with about your difficult time, because kicking any habit is a difficult time.
I had to do that for kicking a decades old heroin habit. I know.
