Hard to say. I honestly believe that different people carry different genetic predispositions for preference of one partner or many. The cheaters, of both genders, may carry the many partner genes.
There could be a host of other reasons as well. From not feeling desired at home, to finding a thrill in engaging in bad behavior.
At the end of the day, I believe the ultimate root cause is a break down in quality communication.
