It depends. I think it matters how long you have been together. The more time invested the harder it is to completely separate. I know couples who hate each other but also know some who became best friends.

Since you have kids the two of you are bound together forever. Not just up until child support payments stop. Graduations, weddings, career achievements, grandchildren, etc. At the very outset of my divorce it was a very strained relationship. As time went on though we became really good friends. The initial pain will eventually wear off and building a new relationship can begin.

I think it’s more common than you’d think. Even if it ends badly and separate on bad terms, they eventually establish some kind of a relationship especially if the kids are involved.
