I'm not in love with him any more and don't want him back
However I still care about him and I know that if he needs me I'll be there.

Is that uncommon?

Since you have kids the two of you are bound together forever. Not just up until child support payments stop. Graduations, weddings, career achievements, grandchildren, etc. At the very outset of my divorce it was a very strained relationship. As time went on though we became really good friends. The initial pain will eventually wear off and building a new relationship can begin.
