In your opinion can distance really ruin a relationship?if so how/why?

It can. But a relationship is only as strong as the people in it. People get insecure and lonely sometimes when they can't see their S/O

As much as it's not the mainstay of a true relationship - the physical side, or lack thereof, can make it hurt even more.
We're physical beings.....and there is something about the smell and touch of the person that you love.

And not having it can make you pine something bad !
