Reminds me of an old experience I had,

A female coworker of mine had baked brownies and cookies. Well, I took a cookie after she offered it to me...but I didn't eat it. Instead I put it with my things with the intentions of eating it later on. Long story short, I forgot to eat it...but I kept on promising myself that I'll have it the next day. She would always ask me if I liked the cookie, and I kept on telling her I haven't eaten it yet...and I would show it to her. Well, she mistook my quirkiness and absent mindedness for liking her. Next thing I knew I found myself in a three year relationship all because I forgot to eat a cookie.

@Ferric67 Not all men are bad at it...many women are not good at giving cues to be picked up on. Neither men nor women are mind readers, it's best to just be open and honest and skip the guessing game altogether. But if both men and women want to do it by means of subtle cues, then they need to make those cues a bit more clear and readable.
