I Absolutely Love Bookstores

I'm incredibly lucky to live close to Powell's City of Books (possibly the largest book store in the world). I remember when I was little one of my girl friends and I would go down about once a month and we would sell all our old books and buy "new" ones. You can spend all day in there and still not see everything they have. It's a book lover's dream come true. What has really been fun is taking my kids and watching them get just as excited. I don't know if I'll ever convert to digital reading. To me nothing is quite as exceptional as a the feel of a book in my hands.

I can see that there might come a time when they stop making new books. But old books will still be in circulation. Antique books are my favorite and I have a small collection.

Ha, yea thrift stores have the occasional good find too once you manage to sort through the huge heaping piles of garbage. "Oh......wow........how could anyone part ways with Tim Allen's 'Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man'??"

I often go to thrift stores for books. They are far cheaper than used book stores, you just have to be willing to spend the time looking through them. It's like a treasure hunt.

Wandering about Powell's is truly a great way to spend the day! Unfortunately, I don't get there nearly often enough.

Thanks for sharing your story VibrantVixen!
I see a trip to Portland in my near future ...

I love bookstores myself...though I've learned (through discipline) to stay out of them. It's not the cost of books... it's the space necessary!... Lol.

I agree....I've yet to be able to catch on to reading a book on my phone...I'll take that burdensome 5 lb hardback over the phone any day.

I love Powell's, and I love Portland!

The internet has certainly been a blessing and a curse. Lots of small business owners shut down because they simply cannot compete. The overhead of renting space and utilities is far greater than the cost of shipping. I have yet to purchase a book online myself. But I understand why people do.

No, it's hard to compete, for sure. It's like the Made-in-USA argument. Of course I buy American when I can, and you want to support the American worker, but how do you compete with foreign labor costs. Though the two issues are different, it's the same dynamic.

I imagine many years from now possibly......there's still a lot of love out there for bookstores. What I hate to see disappearing are the old dive stores in the middle of the city where you can sometimes find an absolute gem.

You are right, a real book is much better but you may not have a choice in the future. It is a matter of cost.

yeah... that's the effect of Amazon. It's good (better prices) and bad (a lost cultural experience).

I love bookstores. Easily can spend several hours roaming the isles. -.-
