How do you pronounce February?

My office got into an argument on the proper way to say February. Half of us, myself included, pronounce the first 'r' the other half say that's wrong and the first 'r' is dropped. I know both ways are acceptable. How do you say it?

i pronounce the first r - that’s why it’s there. same thing with library. people say “libary”. there are no silent r’s in english that i can think of. if an r is silent it’s because the proper pronunciation of the word has been neglected, and perhaps learned and passed on improperly.

Feb-ru-ary is the traditional pronunciation.
However, people have been using Feb-u-ary for many years as well.
Dictionaries recognize BOTH pronunciations.
As you said, both are now accepted (and if you know that both are accepted, why are you arguing about which is proper).....i.e., they are BOTH proper.
I pronounce the first “r” and say it as Feb-ru-ary (but have no problem with those using another accepted pronunciation).

@DragonFruit We work in an office and need something to do other then listen to people yell at us over the phone so we yell at each other instead.
The first 'r' must always be pronounced...

If anyone pronounces that first "R" in front of me, they get a slap to the face.
It's FEB U ARY

your staffers don't understand dialect do they? :P people who argue about stupid shit need to get laid by sewage latent handpuppets from the salvation army.
bunnyXbunny · 36-40, M
@sighmeupforthat That happens on casual Fridays.
@sighmeupforthat Why specifically from the salvation army?

If an r follows a consonant without a vowel and is then followed by a vowel, - that consonant is then silent.

In correct usage to pronounce the first 'r' would require an a, e, or y to precede it.

The purpose then is to signal the vowel's full sonic inflection as Yew, rather than oo.

So then people that mispronounce the first r are verbally incorrect and therefore, displaying their ignorance of how American Language functions.

In other words, don't correct them. Just smile knowingly and wait to learn all their other stupidity. It's fun.
The first 'R' is not dropped in the true interpretation. I have always voiced the firs 'R' and always have done. I guess it comes down to how you are taught this :-)

Both "r"s should be enunciated, skipping over the first is linguistically lazy! 😚
