On the ferry to Dover. Been a little bit hectic today. I thought I had allowed more time than necessary for the drive from Apeldoorn to Dunkirk but I hadn't allowed for rush hour traffic in Antwerp. Really glad the car has online navigation, after a half hour of walking pace traffic the satnav rerouted. Not sure if it was any faster in the end but at least we were moving all the time.

I'll add pictures from yesterday evening and this morning eventually.

Dressed for dinner in a cheap but very comfortable hotel. Bloke sitting at the bar is watching the football on his mobile. I'm sitting six metres away and I can bear every word of the commentary and every cheer. I'm surprised at myself, I am actually enjoying it.

@SunshineGirl It's only the bar that's purple. The rest of it is quite reasonable colours, mostly plain matt white.

I was a bit nervous getting changed. Not exactly dressing for dinner, just wanted to get out of the dress I'd worn all day. I wasn't sure how busy the bar would be and felt a bit conspicuous.

But it's almost empty, just the football fan at the bar and half a dozen people who just passed through.

I really should stop worrying. Everyone I have encountered so far on this trip has been a paragon of politeness and professionalism.

A seemingly slightly more sophisticated couple just walked up to the bar. He asked for an Americano with milk only to be told by the barmaid (actually the receptionist doubling as barmaid and waitress) that she couldn't do an Americano just now only cappuccino and something else. He meekly accepted this excuse instead of pointing out that the Gaggia espresso machine can certainly make an espresso and has plenty of boiling water to turn it into an Americano!

I ordered fish and chips. It's just arrived. With a slice of buttered white bread. It's been a long time since I've had British industrial sliced bread, I'd forgotten how unspeakable it is.
