Just a thought

I know there are people who like sports, and there are people who don't care about sports, but what i dont get is why the people who hate sports has to make it abundanty clear how much sports just doesn't make sense to them. Whenever there is a big sporting event coming up people who never talked about sports before have to make it clear just how pointless that sport is. It's not like we who like the sports ever come here and start talking smack about your woobles crochet animals or 9 cats hobbies...

Maybe that's because you dont get their woobles and hoggles screamed at you by ads on tv, the radio and seeing all the team paraphernalia everywhere, or have people block ur streets with cars and trafiic coz of said woobles and crocheted animal fans.

It really does get quite overboard.

Its not like the fans need to be reminded every 30 minutes and every 100 yards of said sports event😏

@OogieBoogie yeah but come on i mean theres positives to sports to. Many young kids build team building skills and leadership skills. All i am saying is to call it worthless is like overboard!
@Rokan well, ok.... that's fair.
Sport isnt all bad. I get that it gives people a sense of community, its fun to watch and be part of.
Its a way to get fit, learn the value of team mates and such.

But i also think its gotten way out of proportion.
All the money that goes into massive sports arenas.....and not into hospitals etc. The money poured into buying players, advertising, all the managers, and effectively a whole company to run each team.

When theres medical research, housing, community farms....so many other options that would benefit communities in a more significant way.

And if youve ever lived near a sports venue....its loud. Their lights are flipping bright. The rubbish. The serenity you lose from your weekend coz of the game and the people chaos it brings with it.

I dunno....it all seems overboard to me🤷‍♀

@OogieBoogie but look at this way. Those massive arenas are paid for by billionairs. Those people could just hang onto thier money and it wont go back into economy. How many thousands of jobs does it create supporting familes. We cant control what billionaires do with their money but it isnt just wasted.

Then mental health is a huge thing too so being able to go to a game with some buddys and take a load off and find enjoyment is a huge benefactor to mental health and society.

Im not saying its perfect right im just asking for people not to just call something worthless.
@Rokan i dont know about where you live, but here, the government pays for the arenas.

Its not thousands of jobs, its overpaid jobs for only some, and it's the everyday poorman that over spends on team paraphernalia like stickers, mugs, posters, bags, hats.... that it all adds up and they can't afford to go to the actual games coz the tickets/food/parking costs half a weeks wages.

I suppose im coming at it from perhaps a slightly different culture. Sports here is more 'elite' rather than community driven. We dont have college sports.

Its funded a LOT by the government. Even crap like greyhound racing.
So public money that should go to more imperative initiatives, don't.

Rent, petrol, food, electricity and water bills.... it's all gone up a stupid amount in the last few years.....no average man has money left over for such luxuries.

Everything about sport is expensive here. Expensive to play, expensive to train for, expensive to go see.

I know people who save all year to go to the grand final. Yes, they love it. Its their thing.
But they sacrifice to do it.
And both have full time jobs.

If it could be more community involved, community level.... then yeah, great.

@OogieBoogie I mean I am in the US and as far as NFL goes you typically have the owners and investors of the team that paya large the cost of arenas including upgrades and renovations. Tax payers do pay as well from the state but it also brings in revenue like tourism to the cities.

All that steel work, all that concrete work, landscaping work, materials, transportation, etc... an arena could typically take 3 to 4 years to build and in that time we are looking at 20,000+ jobs that went into the whole thing.

It is one cycle of revenue that goes back into the community. Some of the championship games cost a lot of money but a typical game is usually affordable to most incomes.

I definitely see where you are coming from though and what you say is for sure valid. There is a lot of waste with tax payer dollars from every government I seen. I even seen in England that if you walk into the wrong pub sporting the wrong team you can be killed and that is ridiculous. I don't think the extremes should bring down the good things though. A sport is a fun hobby / entertainment and people shouldn't take it as seriously as they do.

I think what I am saying is that I think its valid that sports has a spot at the table of something that can be important to community. You brought up a good point about college sports. Those programs do bring in a lot of revenue to the schools and students.
@Rokan From what i see of American sports culture.... it's waaay different than here.
More people get involved.
Its a whole thing. It has greater team spirit.

@OogieBoogie I don't want to ask you where here is because that is rude and invasive, but my dad was a coach and I felt like he did a lot of good as an educator and developing young people to learn to work hard, work as a team, take leadership, and instill confidence in. That is kind of what brought this post on because I have seen people just call things worthless as if they couldn't find any value at all to something. And that kind of bothers me because we all have our things that others might not find value in but we would like to be respected enough that we are accepted by others to see what we value has some sort of worth.
@Rokan Oh i dont think it's worthless. Its just here, at professional level....its big money.
Partly subsidized by the government.
And often its so elite, its not our state players that get contracted, its players from other states, and even other countries.

I think there are too big of differences between what sport means in your neck of the woods....to mine. Its just not tje same culture and imput into the community.
Rokan · 36-40, M
@OogieBoogie I suppose i do see people from other countries come to this country to play professionally, but its not like a huge percent do that. Usually talent is selected from the colleges and stuff.

It does sound like its pretty big where you live though and from what your saying its a cash grab then. Why doesn't anything get put back into the community?
@Rokan I dont know. Greed?
Ecconomics? Im not sure.

You have to realize that our population isnt as big as yours. There isnt the massive population poole to draw talent from. There isnt a huge community to input physically and financially.
I suppose for the cost, teams would get very little back 🤔
Rokan · 36-40, M
@OogieBoogie I don't know where you live to be fair so I don't know what the population differential is.
@Rokan 🤣. .. Tasmania.

And the differential is HUGE 😂
Rokan · 36-40, M
@OogieBoogie oh I know tasmania because of this guy
@Rokan Aye👍

Its on our state flag 😏
